So having enjoyed free electricity the past few years, our yard now requires to levy fees for the electricity they supply. The free power was part of a deal offered a few years ago to offset a hefty fees increase. This year they have lumped this on top of an annual price rise, so all in all quite an overall % increase.

Then to further wind berth-holders up we are required also to provide the metered lead ourselves.

Having never had a metered supply before is this the norm for other metered electricity supply users to supply their own meter, or does the yard / marina normally issue this device ?

Anyone what footage berthing fees are currently at typical marinas on the Hamble presently ? Might be time for a move.

When my boat was in UK ..... I could either supply a lead with embedded meter and plug into the socket near my berth - or use an un-metered lead to the Pay as you Use slot meter at head of pontoon.

We get a short lead provided by the marina, with a Metermaid in it. Plug the boat's shorepower lead into the Metermaid lead, the marina guys read the Metermaid every quarter and send a bill.

There are old school meters on our pontoon for each individual shore power outlet.
Upgrade in progress to a system where we have a pre pay account online or at the office and use a card for identification when plugging in . No meter leads involved but saves the marina reading meters .

You have been lucky having electric included regardless of energy used . Electric where I am used to be the same as at home but has increased significantly and will no doubt increase again with the new system. I suppose it encourages us to be economical with power use.

Thanks. I thought there was rule which prevented selling on electricity at a profit, although that said the proposed rate of £0.18 per kwh seems reasonable, just a bit annoyed at being advised of a triple whammy, especially as the limited parking is dominated by the live aboards, who get an allocated space I can't use. Revewing rates at other Hamble marinas right now.

Marinas are allowed to charge an admin fee, to cover their expenses in delivering the electricity to berths.

In one marina I have been in the marina supplies a (short) metered lead, but charges a hefty quarterly charge for it (on top of that for the electricity used, which in my case was a small fraction of the quarterly charge).

In another marina, not far from the first, the marina supplies the (short) metered lead for which you have to pay a significant deposit (£160?) but there is no quarterly charge, just electricity used.

Elsewhere, in smaller boatyards and marinas, I've had coin slot meters and pre-paid cards which you buy from the yard, etc.

I know it’s further from home but Ocean Quay in the Itchen is a lot cheaper that the Hamble marinas - at least those below the bridges anyway. The other mobo only marinas in the Hamble may be competitive.

From excrescence of metermaids, i would pay a deposit to the marina & use theirs if / when , it goes wrong, they replace it @ no cost to you

I had to provide my own metered lead. Internet site specialising in Caravan supplies had the same brand of lead but cheaper than a Chandlers and variety of lengths
