Who owns a boat name?

Ah, thats a nice try to get off the hook Claymore. We all know there is no other boat and it was you all the time. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Happy sailing, Steffen

If it's Part 1 registered, the choice is the sellers, if he wants to keep the name, you have to rename (he not only owns the name eg "Loads a Money" but also "Loads a Money 2" etc).
If it's not Part 1 registered or you don't intend keeping it registered, you can call it whatever you want, although QE2 might be a bit over the top.

Dammit Steffen - of course there was another sugarpuffbubblebum of Kintyre its such a common name I'm sure there were 3 or 4 - but it was never me who was always asking for a radio check and then advising the coastguard each and every time they left their berth to go to the diesel pontoon with 3 persons on board - eta 4 minutes. I never called out the lifeboat just because I fancied a tow through the bumpy bit and I never chanced a Port and Starboard on the Seacat or told the RoRo skipper to wait while I sat head to wind hoisting my mainsail in the fairway.
But when people saw the name on our dodgers there was a fair bit of nudging and winking going on.... so they all thought it was I!
So I sold the boat.
There is another Claymore but he is in the Irish Sea so thats far enough away from me - beyond that, one of the old Caledonian MacBrayne ferries bore the name.

I used to own a boat registered on Part 3. The name was subsequently adopted by two other boats in my local area and in one case I started getting bills from the local Marina that were not mine. It took some time to sort out. That is the down side of having two boats around with the same name

If you are far enough away for it not to create confusion and do not wish to change the name, on Part 3 it is up to you. You could even agree with the owner that you will change the name and then not bother to do it. I do not thinnk he will have any redress.

redress

if you decide not to change the name you would have to forfeit the boat's part 1 registration.

i hear that Lloyd's yacht club which is now on it's 3rd 'Lutine' is trying to take action against the owner of the first boat who has changed the name back to Lutine (presumably not pt 1 registered)

Changing the name...mmm

I walk under ladders, don't care about Fri 13th and even put keys on the saloon table but ..... BIG BUT never again shall I change a boat name...

I've had 4 boats, 2 absolute disasters and 2 fantastic ones and yes you guessed it the ones I'd changed WERE bad luck... or is it that I just remembr the bad parts because of the name changes? Don't know, but won't be doing it again!!

Re: Changing names?

My first boat I kept the name which was its name from new
The second I kept the name pass on, which was not on the boat. We were looking over the boat and my partner passed the comment to me "I wonder what 'shes' called" and added "strange if its mine name"! and yes you guess it, while looking at the hull I could see the faint outline where the letters of her name had been removed.
The owner from below with the reg. details with its new name.
Question - does the bad luck continue down the line of owners?
Anyway so far so good!
