I really don't know why people go on about these these things. It's so far in the past, it's now about time to put it all behind us.

But fancy posting a link like that! "Oh, M'Lud, we might have thought about doin' them in, and, och jings, so we did too, we slaughtered them after they'd taken us in, fed us, and welcomed us into their homes as honoured guests. But ye ken how it is; one thing leads to another, an' then, afore ye know it, ye've got a massacre on yer hands.

"But it wisnae wir fault, a big boy called Dalrymple made us dae it."

"Ah'm offy sorry, mister. Ah dinae mean it, so ah didnae. It wis that big boy frae Fettes College whit made me do it - the wan that's ca'd 'Bambi' behint his back. Whit wi' his goin' oan this week aboot aw ra slavery 'n stuff that yon awfy English folk in Liverpool an' Bristol an' Bath were up tae, aw' they years ago..... Ah'll no dae it again, so ah wilnae.

Dis that mean ah'm barred frae ra Clachaig - again....?"

(Author's note - The Clachaig Inn, in Glencoe - just a few hundred yards [ sorry, metres ] from the site of the infamous massacre - had a sign posted prominently above the door for many years "No Tinkers or Campbells" )

It got interesting once when the weekend climber-lads from Glasgow - over 30 off them - were in, all had bought their pints and fried Mars Bars, and one of 'em called out "I'm a Campbell". One by one, each and every last one of 'em stood up, and in emulation of the Kirk Douglas movie, claimed 'I'm a Campbell' too.

The owner-landlord, who did not enjoy the best of reputations among his clients - for his habit of 'creative accounting' with the change - blanched, for he feared a reckoning was at hand. His fear was not entirely misplaced....

Konstabel Ross of the Argyll Finest, as he was then, was asked to attend - urgently. He cam' in, bought himself a pint, sat down in the middle of the large and growing group and asked 'Right, lads. Who thinks they can beat me at darts?' ....and he put his chequered cap on the bar, a clear signal he was staying.

And he was there when the bar finally shut, about 0145 on the Sunday morning.

It was just after that he got made up to Sergeant.)
