That bugger Telford gets everywhere
but he didnae get there
It wisnae designed by him
but by John Stevenson!
Built in 1792 by John Stevenson of the Oban area, legend has it that on completion, a horse pulling a cartload of hay was sent across the bridge to test its strength. (With no additional strengthening, forty ton trucks cross it without a worry these days.)
Is it not the Trans-Atlantic Tunnel he's referring to? If so, I believe it was designed by Sir Isambard and built (the English half at least) by A. Washington. Who built the other half I've completely forgotten.
It was just a co-incidence that I'd had a few pints of "Ember" in the adjacent pub last week. The landlord showed me a booklet about the bridge. It was good value for £450 don't you think?
I was up in Glencoe at the weekend (Three sisters beer from Atlas Brewery is a must) and picked up a leaflet in the pub as I was intrigued by the title!

I know Claymore warned us things were awfie expensive north of ra border, but £450 for a booklet? Let's hope the south coast marinae don't hear about this.
