I want to do some maintenance strip down work on the rod steering ( 1996 boat, Premiere style pedastal) on my boat but emails to Lewmar asking for a parts diagram or exploded drawing go unanswered. No luck with google either - only doagram I could get was for cable steering.

Does anyone have a manual for a rod steering system? Even if its a different pedastal, its likely that the basics will be the same.

Rod Ends, Bevel Gearbox and a Cobra Maintenance Manual With Part Nos

This link http://www.eddievan.com/documents/whitlock_cobra_steering.pdf will take you to a pdf of the Whitlock maintenance manual which has a parts list. Its not a good copy but should be OK.

The rod ends will be ball and sockets and many sizes are available from general suppliers i.e. http://www.rod-ends.co.uk Just Google "Rod End Supplies, UK".

You may have a bevel gearbox for turning the rods through right angles (common on centre cockpit installed pedestals). These too are common components for example, http://www.tandler.co.uk/sbg/sbg.htm.

Seals and bearings for these items are all available from standard suppliers and can prove to be a low cost solution to overhaul. I went through a lot of hassle trying to source parts for a 1973 yacht. Eventually they were all found surprisingly easily when I ventured away from leisure marine industries.

Of course some of the Pedestal parts are likely to be specialised and unique.

Hope this helps, good luck.

If you are looking for parts a guy called Cliff Minshull who opperates independantly but effectivly acts as an agent for Lewmar I have his contact details somewhere if you need them PM me his buisiness is called Winch Servicing or close to that. You will wait an eternity if you try to deal with Lewmar. I also have a pdf of the Cobra system you used to be able to see some info on the Lewmar web site.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I can now get down to discovering where the bolts and nuts that fell out of the bottom of the system ( crossing the channel) came from.

Cliff Mogridge, http://www.winchservicing.com/, he's rebuilding a Cobra pedestal for a friend of mine at the moment.
