White Flares

Re: I\'m sure you\'re not serious Chris,.....

You shouldn't be letting off flares ....... they actually are illegal to let off except under controlled or emergency conditions..........

Re: Rely on the sea to extinguish ..... really ?

Blimey Nige. That's exactly what Steve said. Read his post again.

Sumnmary for lookers on who are getting confused. Marine flares should only be let off at sea, as they'll be still burning when they hit the water (or even under).. the point is that fireworks are designed to go out before they hit land. A marine flare landing on someones house is similar to an incendiary device

We used to get through literally hundreds of very cartridges on seismic ships - you could often smell the burnt cordite when coming up to the bridge after a certain enthusiastic Norwegian mate had been on. He used to have the ABs loading one whilst he fired the other!

New Years eve whilst alongside in Norway was an expensive evening for cartridges also.

A new club ????

I was with Western Geophysical and also a French outfit that pioneered Syledis and steam guns instead of 'dirty air-guns' .... CGG .........

Quote > Don't forget that marine pyrotechnics rely upon the sea to extinguish them <

My point is that SEA DOES NOT extinguish them ....... I have many examples to back up that .....

Firearms Law ....

They are subject to Firearms Legislation .....

In fact the 'Mini-Flares' that were available before are similarly affected .....

I carry white flares and I haven't used one in anger for about 20 years.

I don't think that any torch shows up as well as does a white flare , or even better a rocket, though I do have rigged a 65w tungsten-halogen spotlight during after dark sailing.

What's happened to me is that discretion has taken the better part of valour - I no longer insist on my rights but quietly get out of the way.

In any case I don't think any white flare would have any effect on a Maroc ferries boat.

Re: Aren\'t you

Perfectly legal to have Very (or any other signalling pistol) on board, and to have flare rounds for them. You cannot take them ashore without a licence.

Re: A new club ????

I was with Western's biggest competitor, Geco-Prakla. G-P merged with SSL about 10 years ago. They have now merged with their competitors to form WesternGeco, and are still using air-guns. CGG are still going.

The French outfit who did Syledis was Sercel. Best radionav system before GPS arrived.

Re: Aren\'t you

Go abroad my dear, go abroad.
anyone remember that song?

I guess you'd have to have a long friendly chat with local police force on that one. I doubt that on land the same rules apply. It's quite easy to get a license though, so probably a better route.
