Santa has brought me a subscription to one of a choice of IPC magazines. Having no interest in Amateur Pornography, Minis, Volkswagens, Spitfires, or Gardening, I have managed to narrow it down to YM or PBO.

I gave up buying both some time ago and the occasional reads since have failed to encourage me to dip into my sporran. So, which one would you choose to have delivered free for the next 10 months? - and why?

A while back I put up a post asking for recommendations for which sailing mag to give up !! YM PBO or ST due to feature duplication, repitition, and repitition. The current thinking is to give up YM and keep the PBO and ST subs.

so there!!

but I still might change my mind if Paul Gelder sends me a bag of money!

I like both PBO and YM. A pal of mine has a sub to PBO, and I have one to YM, and we do swops occasionally.
If you compare the cost of an annual subscription against say, the cost of how many pints of beer you can get in a pub for the same money, it does become quite good value!

Like them (and subscribe to) both but if I had to choose to keep only one it would be YM for me.
All down to personal preference at the end of the day, though.

As a non-boat owner I subscribed and enjoyed YM, but now I have bought a boat I am wondering if PBO might be a better bet. On the other hand, I could just have both.

For me it depends on whether I'm in the middle of a contract (and therefore working) or in between contracts.

If working I buy YM and think about voyages and my next boat, whilst getting the yard to do the hard stuff. If I'm in between I pore over old and new PBOs and work out which job I'll try to tackle myself.

Strange one this i was taken ill in Dec. and had time to read lots of old Ym and PBOs from late ninetys could not put them down , asked the wife to buy me Jan 2007. edition looked through them and decided never again! What the hec as gone wrong with these very popular mags? H .N .Y.cheers bobt

As a lifetime reader of, and nearly a lifetime worker for, YM I have a slight bias but from your perspective the answer really has to be: what do you want from your magazine?

Yachting Monthly covers all aspects of cruising under sail in all its forms both in the UK and further afield. It specialises in providing information about handling and managing your boat, getting the most out of your cruising and providing amusing and educational articles from readers about their own exploits.

PBO also covers cruising in a broad sense but concentrates on the practical aspects of boat maintenance and managing a boat on a budget.

In a nutshell you might say YM is for readers who want to get their hands wet, PBO is for readers who want to get their hands dirty.

As you would expect I can make no comment on ST.

JJ,

My perception of PBO and YM is that both have been dumbed down over years. PBO used to have really practical articles about people building their own boats etc. YM used to be mostly about serious cruising. They now both seem to cater mostly for the AWB market, ie. people who don't take on major DIY projects and also don't really cruise much futher than the Solent/Channel Islands/Med. I guess this is because that's the market for magazines these days.

How curious. My occasional browsing of ST in WH Smiths gives me the impression of an info-mercial; testing 20 GRP Plotters, or sets of oilies, at a time, and endless articles on how to get into a marina berth at every conceivable combination of wind, tide, prop walk, colour of pontoon, etc.....

Hence my preference for YM which caters for my type of MAB sailing.

Each to their own.

I sometimes look through them in the press shop but at the price asked in Europe couldent aford to buy!! I look for the ads i didnt think there were any articals anymore??

Illhave to look more closely next time though i think there was about 180 pages the first 89 were adds and there was at least the same at the back

In the 70s and when i could find it in the 80s i bought PBO and read yachting monthly in the shop!Dosent take long.Unless you want the ads!

Shame really, such a good forum but so little praise for the mags,Methinks someone on management ,ought to take notice .When you think its the sale of mags that keep the firms advertising and in their way keeping this forum open. cheers bobt
