Im in the market for a wind generator and not sure which make or type to buy ?

Ignoring the cost factor, I want a reliable, reasonably quiet, high out put unit to mount up the mizzen, I need to be able to charge a bank of 24v and 12v batterys so need to run a switchable dropper unit and be able to stop the blades from spinning when the boat is unattended.

What I need is advice on reliability, make and model, any advice gratefully received

The company in Ringwood makes the quietest 100w, we had the aquagen model that could be towed and then with blades used as a wind gen, very quiet, but better in stronger wind zones like the Carib, only really started at 10 knots
Very reliable, great back up, we sailed 10,000 miles in 10 months with it, and had it as a wind gen when we werent sailing. We blew up a regulator, (clumsy use of tester when power was on!) they gave us a new one.

If money is no object you may well want to look at the duogen from duogen. it works in air and swings down to work in water. Apart from that Ampair and Rutland and LVM are all very good and all are very helpful. The air X may be a little noisey but has a massive output. The Forgen will give enough to top up your batteries but not much else. They will certainly give you more power for your money than solar cells which are twice the price in the UK than in the USA.

I have a very old LVM 25 which has rotated silently for 20 years plus. It is now out of production, but when I had a problem LVM sent me a bearing FOC!

unfortunately the duo gen is,nt a great deal of use as ithas to be mounted on the stern to enable it to be lowered into the waterand then it would foul the boom on the mizzen.

So we definetly need just a wind generator that I can mount half way up the mizzen out of the way, Im just a little concerned that mounting it higher up I may not be able to stop the blades turning when not needed, and Im not sure about the amount of noise it would create in the cockpit below, is there a particular make that is quiter than another ?

I can get a rutland 913 through the trade a lot cheaper than any other make but cant get any one at the counter with a brain to tell me what I need to know !

thanks in advance

whatever generator you mount up the mast, make sure it is mouted on rubber to reduce the transmission of noise.

the air marine can be stopped with a switch that shorts out the field coils avoiding the need to go near the blades. when shorted it reduces to around 40 rpm. there is still a little noise transmitted through the mast but nothing obtrusive. its big disadvantage is that it does make a racket while charging which most people dislike but the output is huge.

Re: Rutland 913

I put a 24v Rutland 913 up the mizzen. Padded the bracket (a Pacific 100 mizzen bracket, as Marlec don’t make one) with a pad cut from a car tyre inner tube. I get no vibration or noise at all.
I used the Marlec SR200 24v regulator and a Waeco 24v to 12v regulator / charger so I could charge the 12v batteries.
Ian - you would have seen the setup when you came out on Lady in Red.
