Which videocamera for on board?

Yes, but still very available in bulk by interweb. And massively cheaper! I am about to return to Kenya carrying 200 tapes - should keep her going for a few weeks!

The problem with recording straight onto DVD is that you have to be able to edit, no one wants to watch raw video of your latest escapades - probably not even you! I am no expert, but I believe the format has to be converted before editing which brings another bunch of technical challenges.
 
I have a Panasonic SDR-S7, costs about £160 and I'm very pleased with it. I think that a beach-proof version is available at slightly higher cost, might be better for a boat. It's tiny and fits in the proverbial "shirt pocket", hours of DVD quality video on cheap as chips SD cards, downloads readily to a TV or to a laptop, and even I can edit the result. Highly recommended.

Thats where the RW disc comes in ... I know there are easier ways to do things and shorter routes if you spend a bit of dosh on more modern gear - but I quite enjoy playing about with files and graphics.
You can record onto RW disc ... then cut it to avi or whatever format suits your style ... edit or edit in the VOB mode - which I find hard ...

At the end of the day - I think of them as memories and archive rather than as my Father did - trot out the super 8 cines of travels / holidays etc.

Another vote for the Xacti. Very easy to use, tough and good quality video. The newer ones are waterproof to 1m and HD resolution.
 
I'd also recommend helmet cameras, there are loads out there that are completely waterproof so would be perfectly save on board.

I've got the Go Pro Digital Hero 5 and it's great for the on the water and you can strap it to anything that you want to and it's really good value for money.
