Yes, but still very available in bulk by interweb. And massively cheaper! I am about to return to Kenya carrying 200 tapes - should keep her going for a few weeks!
The problem with recording straight onto DVD is that you have to be able to edit, no one wants to watch raw video of your latest escapades - probably not even you! I am no expert, but I believe the format has to be converted before editing which brings another bunch of technical challenges.
