Wouldn\'t dream of it,,,,

I spent several weeks on an Arab Dhow in the late '60's. The "facilities", as normal on those boats was a well made teak box hung over the stern with just enough room to squat.
No paper. Just a tin on a string. Lower tin to fill, wash bum, rinse and wash hands.
I had my own tin,,,,,,,,,,

Where does Charmin come on the list? SWMBO is gonna get mad if I ban it in favour of something more akin to greaseproof paper...

\"Heybridge must seem like the Ritz. \"

Well, not really, much colder for a start and I wouldn't wash anything in Heybridge canal water. :)
Also the dhow never ran out of sea water but the paper in the basin bog is sometimes not there at all,,,,,,,,,

Dissolving tissue

Peggy,

Trouble with degradable tissue can be that in rough conditions sea water can find its way to the heads area and dissolve the tissue before its used. Had a major problem with this last year in a tropical storm that lasted for days when we ended up with the dreaded tissue over the walls ceiling & sole. We found that the best cleansing agent was the shower head and being only able to partially dry the affected parts, anti-fungus powder had to be applied.

Re: Dissolving tissue

Trev, premium brands such as Charmin, White Cloud, Cottonelle, etc should not be flushed down a marine toilet...they're impregnated with extra fibers for strength and creams for softness and can sit in water for a month without dissolving. They'll also clog up a macerator. If SWMBO insists that only premium TP is acceptable, it MUST go into a container, never down the loo.

Nigel, m'luv...the solution to your problem is simple: mount the TP roller on the inside of the door to the vanity, under the sink, instead of on the exposed head wall. And perhaps also close the head porthole when conditions indicate? :)

Re: Dissolving tissue

As for a suitable container, we put our used paper in fragranced 'nappy sacks' which keeps the smell away. I also use cheap disposable nappies for soaking up water in bilges etc. Mind you, it gave my boyfreind a heart attack after the first time I came back from the shops with nappies and nappy sacks!

Re: toilet paper tests/which water type

How much or little difference would salt water make? Educated guess is extremely little difference

Re: toilet paper tests/which water type

No difference at all. The only issue is how fast any TP breaks up and dissolves when wet...so it would matter what the liquid is...fresh water, salt water, milk, tea, juice...

Don't use bog roll on the boat - the bidet is much better especially on long cruises - prevents "itchy bum" syndrome.

Re: toilet paper tests/which water type

Many years ago I was a member of the management team in a Branch of a National Firm of Paper merchants.

During the presentation of our Branch Plan to the Board the Branch Manager stated "I have found a niche for large toilet rolls!"

The room dissolved into laughter!

When we were in St Peter Port last year, we bought some "special" biodegradable marine loo paper! That place by Boatworks or whatever. SWMBO just had to buy it, although I'm very cynical about these things. Full marks to them if they're repackaging Sainsbury's low cost.

That's exactly what they're doing...though it may not be the same brand as Sainsbury's. Years ago I was at the plant of one of the major US sanitation equipment mfr who has "marine/rv" TP in their product line...and watched workers repackaging a brand of cheap made-from-recycled TP that sells in supermarkets for about $1.50 USD/6 rolls into their own "marine/rv" $4.95 4-roll packs. That's when I realized that there's nothing special or arcanely different about "marine" TP...it's just cheap TP that dissolves quickly at an inflated price. That discovery sent to me scurrying to investigate adding "marine" TP to our own product line...but I had to abandon the idea because we didn't have the space to store the truckload (6000 cases) I'd have to buy at a time to make it cost effective.

(I'd never have believed that toilet paper could be a topic that could generate over 30 posts!)
