Looks like we're about to close the deal on a "new" boat. I am currently buying bits a pieces to get her up to spec and I have noticed that there isn't a tiller extension.

Which tiller extension would you recommend? (27 foot cruiser)

If the cockpit is not too wide you may not need one. When I first stepped aboard "Banjo" I mentally added a tiller extension to the needed list but after sailing her realize now its not really needed.

I bought one of these Spinlock adjustable tiller extensions too for my 27ft Westerly. Great bit of kit. After you get over the cost, you wont be sorry.

Yes, that's exactly what I've had for many years!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I posted same query on here about a year ago for a 29' boat & balance or recommendations was the Spinlock. I bought the asymmetric handle version and have never regretted it- a great piece of kit. The push button extension is particularly useful.

Well that accounts for all the money spenders.

I have a home made extension made from a piece of Al tubing with a Tee bar glued to the top and a U shaped piece of SS with a screw through it onto the tiller and another screw through the Al tubing.
It works well and gets a lot of use. olewill

Many thanks for all the replies, the spinlock does indeed look like a serious piece of kit, but at over €200 it seems a bit excessive (especially when added to the list of other kit needed). I'll keep hunting and see how we get on.

I'll duck and run after saying this, but on AMber (Anderson 26) I fitted an RWO dinghy extension for about £15, never an issue, never a problem helming with it under sail or power, and I could spend the difference from a spinlock on lots of Golden Mellowing liquid made by Glenfiddich...

I can recommend the Friend Tiller Stick which has a very comfy handle, adjusts very positively and clips on to the coaming so you can leave the tiller. Send a PM to Gin of this parish (search for his profile) and he'll send all the details. Quality job for a fraction of a Spinlock.

A word of warning if using a dinghy one ... the thinner aluminium ones can bend (I regularly used to bend them on dinghies, so the heavier weight of a yacht rudder may bend them easier). However, if you can stretch to around £60, a carbon one is very light and immensely strong - recommend the Rooster ones (Google Rooster Sailing) - superb.

However, on a yacht first choice would be the Spinlock as noted above - although price is a little scary!

Many thanks, I have done just that. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you're going for a dinghy one - I'd suggest getting one with a proper metal UJ - the dinghy flexi-plastic ones fail on dinghies often enough .....
