PBO says get a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 and download Navionics HD. But there appear to be nearly a dozen different versions of the Galaxy 3. I know nothing about tablets but I'm tempted so what does the team advise?

Pop into your local PC World and have a chat with them, personally I use an IPad but Android is just as good.

Screen size may influence your decision along with the type of mobile you currently use oh and cost of course

Depends on the screen size you feel happy with. Navionics don't offer much support once you have brought and their products become obsolete quickly.

Any views on this?

My Memory Map, all uk, seems immortal, if out of date (though just done 700 nm on it). Bought for a XP laptop and old Win mobile phone, they helped me migrate it, 4yrs old to my Android tablet and it still works on previous old devices I've discarded.

Some screenshots here IIRC. britainbyrivendell.weebly.com

Arrived in Hartlepool 04.00...

I liked Navionics on a friend's iPad but wouldn't want it on Android myself. Very happy with VMH charts and Marine Navigator. Not as smooth as vector charts but just as detailed as proper paper charts.

Generally good advice. Keen to sell, not so keen to give "advice on out-of-the-ordinary" and not at all keen once you have bought.
In my experience.

The app you are referring to was obsoleted years ago, but as far as Navionics is concerned, you can continue to use it “as it is” indefinitely within the same device and OS. Unfortunately the new Android Software does not permit the use of older apps, but we have no control over what Android does. You will find that many many other apps have ceased working from the introduction of new Android Software Updates.

When the new Mobile Apps were released, a banner ad was deployed within our first generation Apps indicating they were being removed from Google Play. We also indicated the original Apps would no longer be offered updates or support and we could not guarantee their functionality with future OS releases.

As google regularly update the android OS this has ruled out Navionic for me.

Bummer. Big bummer.
Time to dig out current Y.Monthly and re-read the reports.
Thanks for the info - to you and Nick Robinson.

I have Navionics Uk and Holland running on all my Android devices, including a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1" screen tablet. It works great! Its also on a few wee 7" tablets I have, and also my Sony Xperia phone. All work great, but the smaller tablets dont have a built in GPS like my phone and the Tab 3 has. They run a bluetooth GPS dongle. Perfectly happy with my Navionics for about £23 from Google Play. No extra cost to download it to my other devices, just log into your play account and its all there forever if youve paid.

I have no problem buying stuff from the likes of PC World and Currys, but asking for advice from them is a very dangerous thing. I have overheard sales staff giving completely untrue information about a variety of things, just before launching into their well rehearsed pitch selling extra warranties. Never felt it my place to step in and put them right :(

If you are going to buy from PC World, make sure you know all about what you want, and just buy it.

Wise, very wise.

I run Navionics (non HD) on a Samsung S3, TAB 7 inch VERSION 1 Wifi only and Tab 3 8 inch screen Wifi only. Generally the tab 3 and S3 are the muts nuts. Tab 3 8 inch is very good, picked up from Asda Direct for £139.00 a couple of months ago, think most places are out of stock now though. 7 inch is a little small but great value at the moment. The phone is obviously smaller but great to keep in the pocket. Charts were updated at the end of last year. Used the Tab 3 and S3 for a trip down to the East Coast rivers from the Wash last month, around 350 miles over the two weeks, using Chartplotter and Paper Charts as back up. Really handy just put in a waterproof case.

The 7's currently £119.00 at PC world. The 10 which I'd probably prefer is £259.00 though I'd cry a lot less about losing a £100 bit of kit than a £250 item. Also helps justifying upgrading in a couple of years!

I did a lot of reading reviews with a view to dipping my toe in this water. The Tesco Hudl at £99 gets great reviews, and I would have given it a go as my first dabble. Not sure why they say it has to be Samsung. I have found that my (expensive) Lenovo yoga is good and not power hungry, so I stopped looking at tablets.

I have had TAB3 8 inch since February and works great with navionics and Plan 2 Nav its just updated to the latest android OS and no problem. Navionics has just updated a couple of days ago again with no probs.

I had it on, on a flight to Genoa and it recorded the track from Gatwick there and back, was quite surprised that the GPS was tracking the satelites at 490 knts!

You can get Tesco refurbed Hudls with 12 months guarantee off their ebay outlet for £60. Hudls are not bulletproof though, but their faults are inconsistent. A small but significant number have had battery life problems and a few other bugs have appeared on some, but the return policy is sound and % wise only a few have been returned. I had a long chat with the IT salesman in Tesco Extra in Bangor earlier this year as there is a 'new' Hudl due quite soon....which, according to him is the same Hudl with the bugs fixed.

He said they are made by the same company as make the Kindle range, but Tesco is not first on their order book priority so the upgrade and a possible 10" Hudl are not first in their 'to do' list.

How much of this is true is anybody's guess, but he seems a decent enough feller, so I believe him.

I have the Samsung galaxy tab 3, model number SM-T310. Has the built in GPS and runs Navionics perfectly. I had a couple of Archos tablets but they didn't seem as robust. I also have the same app on an iPad Air, and there's practically no difference between the two other than the screen size. I'd just be a little less upset seeing my Samsung going over the side of the boat than the ipad.

generally you ask a question once having been defeated once digesting all the info available on the signs and boxes. They come over and read the box...... "it's ok I can read i want to know x". They then make it up......
same with all big chains. Heard someone in halfords yesterday sizing a bicycle on how well the woman could touch the floor. Ignored the 2 critical measurements.

Hi Slimrick do you have to buy the Navionics app twice for a pad and the Samsung or does one licence work? I have it on my pad but tend to keep that below so just wondered if worth a look at a tablet as well?
