Which Radar?

The Raytheon SL72 is no doubt better than the JRC 1000, but at twice the price it should be. Is the JRC 1000 adequate for collision avoidance purposes, or is it not really worth considering? Are there any others worth looking at between the JRC and the Raytheon?

Radar selector guide on-line

specifications to compare are things like beam angle.

there is a brief comparison and the start of a selection guide on our website. www.yachtbits.co.uk - its in the "TECH-TIPS" section. It explains the meaning of beam width with examples and compares a number of systems including the two JRC, three Raytheon and three Simrad scanners. have a look and see if it helps you. Happy to advise if you need more help.

Between the prices of these two you also have the JRC 1500 and the Furuno 1662.

Best Buy

Practical Sailor (a US based newsletter which aims to be like Consumers Reports for sailors) recently did a survey of radars and named the JRC1500 a 'Best Buy'.

Try before you buy

Go to a good chandlers / electronic shop and try each one in turn without an instruction manual. Then weigh up the relative merits of range display clarity etc. But most of all make sure the functions are easy to use.

Most modern radars are built with the same components and are of good quality. JRC1000 is a good calm weather radar (no rain, no wind, no snow) due to the small antenna, giving a too wide horizontal beam width. Rain and sea clutter is a function of the pulse width multiplied by the beam width. If you expect sea clutter (wind) or rain clutter on your trip, go for the much better JRC1500.
