Which radar?

Our Simrad 3G broadband, NSS.................. We installed the lot (ourselves).......The whole lot worked first time - and has been running faultlessly for over 2 years now.

Ah....that must be the difference! Mine was installed professionally by either the boat builder or the electronics people, I'm not really sure as they blame each other for my many problems.

I've had most of the cables and connectors replaced, the NSS12 plotter replaced, both multi displays replaced, autopilot computer, autopilot controller, wind head unit and vhf remote handheld.

In fairness, the NSS plotter remotely controls the entertainment radio and mp3 player faultlessly.

We did think during the installation that as virtually all the time taken was actually routing cables then you could train a monkey to do it - but reality meant if you used a professional you would simply pay through the nose. My electrical skills rise as high as following instructions. We were impressed with the simplicity of installation, but do not have the entertainment system.

You see more Furuno radars on commercial craft than any other make.

They may also be leading suppliers of commercial marine electronics, in addition to radar, and thus sell their radar on the back of a package (in the same way we would want an integrated set of Garmin or Raymarine).

Our installation of Navico was plug and play - if we had had mixed suppliers I suspect we might then have looked to the services of a professional to integrate - but reading comments suggests that this is not always as successful as NMEA is cracked up to be (but one does tend to hear the horror stories not the successes).
