which new small outboard would you get?

Very true - it's with many things - I detest BMW's but like Volvo ... I loved my Opel Senator in Baltic and the Carlton 24V I had in UK ... one man's meat - anothers poison as they say.

I must mention that the 4.5HP Johnson twin 2st that sits on the back of the 4.5m speedboat (Krim 4) as temp. till the 30 comes back is quiet, starts well, is ancient ! and maintains 9 kts all day long on there. Similar power 4st - I doubt would be able to keep up with it.
 
ive been checking spec on the manufacturers websites and the Suzuki is 4kg lighter. does anyone know if the weight cutting exercise has harmed long term reliability.
also none of the sites say if the engine has a dead mans cord etc. as the teenager will be using it as well occasionally.
does anybody know if this feature is standard on most new engines.
 
The Suzy does have a "dead mans cord".........It works just as well for live ones as well! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes all new outboards have to have a kill cord as standard.
 
yes the suzuki has a kill cord. Mine came with a 5 year warranty. Just check where you would have to go for a service. Some "Suzuki authorised dealers" like MailSpeed don't service.

It was the weight that decided me otherwise i'd have gone for the yamaha.
 
Under fairly recent consumer law, you don't have to go to an authorised dealer to maintain your warranty, though whoever you go to has to use genuine parts.

Though as far as servicing is concerned, what's to do? Change the oil in the gearbox, change the oil the sump, clean or replace the spark plug, and give it a flush through with fresh water. If you use fresh washers on the sump and gearbox plugs you shouldn't have any problems. I am assuming a modicum of mechanical sympathy here, and that some cack handed numpty wont go screwing the threads out of either the sump or the gearbox! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
You're right. In fact they don't even need to be genuine parts, just "comparable quality". But if you do require any repairs under warranty you then have to take it to a Suzuki Authorised Dealership for inspection...
 
Yes that's true, I live out in the wilds, so here's hoping my new one is a guddun!............could mean about a 200 mile round trip! if it isn't.

looks like I'm leaning towards the yamaha2.5 4st.

a chap on eBay is doing them for £419.00 inc delivery and a free fitted bag. he seems to also have a bricks and mortar shop its called pacer marine and another on eBay is BMC Inflatable Boats Ribs Outboards
will also try Brighton's outboard direct
 
When you put the price of a jetmarine as £300, I assume you have seen them advertised New on Ebay. I bought mine from this source and it had the option of " make an offer". I offered £210 and they accepted and sent it carriage free. I am perfectly happy at that price and perfectly happy with its design and performance.
 
that's a remarkable price.
are you concerned about warranty etc as there don't seem to be many dealers.
have you put many hours on it to test its build quality etc.

But it is, of course, illegal to sell a 2-stroke in the EC.

I did see a 3.5 tohatsu, new in Marseille and, unless into bodybuilding, would suggest hunting down a 2-stroke Mariner, Tohatsu, Mercury - they're all the same and deliver quite a lot more thrust at about 80% of the weight to a small 4 stroke.
 
I've got a Honda 2.3 and a Mariner/Merc/Tohatsu 3.5. The latter is not much quieter than the former but has a far more agreeable tone.
Only advantage of the Honda is that it is noticeably lighter than the Mariner.

BUT I thought you wanted a 4hp. In which case, the above are irrelevent.
As others have said, I'd go for the lightest 4hp, 2 stroke - even a reasonably young 2nd hand one.
If you decide on the Mariner/Merc/Tohatsu 2.5/3.5 two stroke, it's important IMHO to get a model with F and N gears. I'm not sure that the 2.5 models, especially the Tohatsu has this feature.

Only the 3.5 Tohatsu/ 3.3 mariner and mercury had F-R clutch. More importantly they had a SS waterpump which the 2.5/2.3 didn't.

Of course it's subjective, that is why I said more than once, "it's horses for courses" I also said it was just IMHO. I like four strokes. Perhaps if you READ my posts on the subject you would know that? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
I'm going to be using the outboard and 2.7mr inflatable mostly around Chichester harbour. i think a 2.5 4stroke would push it along OK.
I've spent a while looking for new or nearly new 3.3 2strokes and they are very expensive now as people still rate them highly

A 2.5 four stroke will do the job just fine Nick. I will be interested to know what you buy in the end. This thread of yours has certainly created some "interest" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

that seems a very reasonable price considering the state of the pound as I presume these are imported.
