Does anyone out there subscribe to Which? magazine? I read in the paper that my Renault dealer was awarded the dubious privilege of being the worst garage in the country and I wanted to read what Which? had to say about them.

If you thought some boat dealers were crooks, try owning a Renault! In the last two years Renault dealers in London have attempted to steal £3500 from me...one said that I needed a new injector system when the only problem was a split high-pressure fuel line, the other told me I needed a new ABS system when the problem apprears to be a dirty ABS pick-up setting off the ABS warning light. They also told me I needed a new oil-cooler (£800) when a blob of Araldite fixed it for approximately 4p. And trying to charge me £125 for a tyre that costs £55 at my local tyre place!

Astons (see previous thread) may not be great, but Renaults are total junk, and their dealers...words fail me! So if anyone has got a copy of the Which? report I'd be very grateful of a photocopy of the appropriate bit. Cheers

One of my business partners had an Espace a few years ago which basically decided that it had had enough and wouldn't go any further. No-one wanted to take responsibility and he ended up (successfully) suing Renault and the dealer. Then bought a Merc estate.

This One ?

Renault Colindale
This London garage wins first prize for the most expensive service and for replacing parts that were perfectly fine. For example, it recharged the air conditioning when it only needed topping up and changed the rear exhaust assembly. It also replaced all three wiper blades at a cost of nearly £60 when only one was split. It then charged our researcher a staggering £840 in total for this.

Ooh...excellent. That's the self-same bunch of cowboys who just tried to relieve me of two grand. Will now compose a vigorous letter to the MD of Renault UK.

Thanks for your help, chaps

Agree. Years and years ago, had a company Espace due to need to lug big cases around. My experience with the dealers for servicing was such that I've put off every single person who has ever told me they were considering buying a Renault.

Its not only Renault dealers

This kind of practice (OK, call it a con) is widespread in the motor industry. They apparently lose money on selling you a car so they have to get it back later
A couple of years ago, I put in my 18,000mile Beemer for a routine service and I received a call from the service advisor telling me I needed a complete change of brake discs at a cool £800 or so. Needless to say, I was rather surprised that such a young car should need new brake discs. To cut a long story short involving both the dealer and BMW GB, it turns out that it was the dealer's 'policy' to advise customers that their brake discs should be changed if the discs were 'approaching 50% worn or more'. I told them where to shove their brake discs and I sold the car at 50,000m still on the original discs
We had another case recently with a Transit van with an apparently failed engine. The Ford dealer inspected the vehicle and told us it needed a new engine at an estimated £2500. We took it to a non-franchised garage who fixed the oil pump for £300

Re: Its not only Renault dealers

Get this then - just got my Jag back from routine service (£604.17 thank you very much) to be told the following needs doing at the prices quoted:

Replace front pads and discs £307.85
Repair leaking heater hose £359.55
Replace bush at bottom of damper £556.01 (should only be done as a pair sir)
Lower wishbone bushes split £944.81
Power steering oil cooler leaking £391.62

....oh and to cap it all they want £64.41 to change the brake fluid.

Now looking for a non-dealer Jag specialist for a second opinion.

Thieving bastards.

Re: Its not only Renault dealers

My Porsche went in for a routine service with no known faults.
They phoned me to say the brakes had failed momentarly whilst road testing.
I told them to look into it and report. Thye couldn't find any reason for the failure and said it was dangerous to drive.

Have new bake system sir< okay, £1,500 later got the car back with an additional
£1,500 service bill , for "routine " work,

who knows they probably never touched the brakes

Renault Colindale.
My delivery drivers van is there as we speak.

Needs a new water pump.

I was worried by the Which report. I can't say I've ever had the feeling that they replace parts which are OK. But there level of service is sh1te.

But they are around the corner from my business premises.

We have a Clio van, our second, this one has been no end of trouble and is due to be changed in Jan. Not sure which way I'll go. Fiesta and Peugeot vans are alternatives but I can't usually get a good finance deal.

Personally, I won't be going anywhere near that place again. Nor will I be buying another Renault...nice design and OK to drive, but crap build quality and crap service from their dealers (I noticed two other Renault dealers made it into the Which? hall of shame). Va-va-vooom, my @rse!

Yeah - and they (i.e. Range Rovers) ain't exactly built to last! Trouble is that anyone who uses a main dealer will find that the 'dab of JB Weld' approach will unlikely to be available. Modern 'mechanics' are more 'fitters of new parts' rather than fixers of old ones. Given the litigious society we live in p'raps that's not so surprising. Anyway, upshot is to (a) never buy a french car and (b) find a good independent mechanic once the warranties no longer worth the paper it's written on (if it ever was!)
