Which is better?

A 1980 C'Kip Twin Diesel.

A 2000 S28 Single Merc 250 Diesel.

What is the Merc 250 Diesel like? Any good?

This boaty lark is totally personal and totally subjective, bit like women, or men if you are of the other sex, (or orientation!)

It would be very sad if we all liked the same type of boat. Even worse, what if ALL designers could only think of the same boat!

So stuff what I, and everybody else thinks, decide what you want from a boat and go for it. In course of time our tastes and ideas change, and personal requirements for SWIMBOS, bimbos, trollops and boyfriends (eh?) all change, so just make a decision and go for it for a bit. If you decide its not right, change it.

I have had an old Huntsman for 18 years but have just aquired a share in a Princess 286. It doesn't mean any decision was right or wrong. Just different.

and really don't like Sealines - Guy on the marina here has one and it's sooooo spacious, comfortable in a seaway, but NOT fast... If you have a need for speed buy the Sealine jelly mould.

I had a look at a C-Kip at Weymouth a couple of years ago.
Lovely boat..but unfortunately just out of my price range at the time.
For me, personally, it would be the trawler every time...safer, roomier, more comfortable, able to use in different conditions and altogether much more of a family cruising and entertaining type of boat, as long as speed isnt an issue of course. You can do some serious all year cruising in her.
When I sell my Birchwood in a few years time I'm definitely going for a trawler,
a Nordhavn if Ive won the lottery in the meantime..now wouldnt that be nice!!!

Anyway youve got to buy what you feel most comfortable with, as others have said
boats are subjective things...and anyway what do I know.

The CKIPPERTHINGY is just like the one that had me barfing from Kip to Rothesay one very flat day last year.
ponged of diesel and damp and needed lots of work doing where the ply had rotted. Seemed a very heavy maintenance number to me - but loads of room.

This really is personal preference. My family would hang me out to dry if I bought a trawler - but hey!, I'm just the skipper.

Both are nice though - have fun choosing!

Yes, Kevin the C'Kip does look lovely, Thats what attracted us to it.
To be honest we went to lookat the Sealine, then saw the C'Kip, After talking further about it, I feel it maybe to high maintanence for us at this time. And as Julie says, i still have a need for speed. So i'm not sure how i'd cope tootling along at 7knts. But i do think its a cracker, Not sure about how the price compares, £64k, and seller won't budge.

On the other hand the Sealine was lovely too, On the market for £69,950. Which i think is not bad for a Year 2000 boat, But even better when the broker told me the seller hasn't used it in a year due to no interest in it, and would probably accept £10k under the asking. We think its exactly what we were looking for, but the question i really want answered is about the engine.
I have never seen one of these with a Single Merc 250 Diesel before, Most of them usually have either Twin petrol or Twin KAD 32's.
Does anyone have experience with this engine? And do you think its powerful enough for the boat?
And with the slating people give Volvo on here, Would the Mercruiser be a better option??

BTW, We are thinking about making the move from Loch to Clyde sometime in the near future.

Cruisers put single Merc diesels in their boats - Ian Poole has one in Mr Max (2850) which is a similar year. He had some Bravo III drive problems but is now on a proper BIII X drive and all seems fine. I assume the 250 is based on the 4.2l block and is a relatively common engine in the states.

With you vast knowledge of Sealines, Have you ever tried a S28 with a Single Mercruiser 250 diesel in it? If so, How did it Perform?

Also what sort of Hull warranty came with Sealines in 2000?

I thought mercruiser only built the D4.2 and variations of it.

As far as i know the 250 is based on the same 4.2 but is a joint venture between cummins and mercruiser in the states and is a fairly new affair (around 2002). So with my ultimately tiny amount of diesel knowledge would it mean that this boat didnt come with this engine from the factory?

Am I way behind on this? Am i once more showing vasts depths of ignorance on a forum topic?
