Oh my god! Do you realise what you may have started? This will surely outdo the liferaft posts - I'm checking back later for a good chuckle!

Weather easing tomorrow - Warsash Spring Series No 2 here we come and I'm going to try to finish on the right line tomorrow! Anyone else make that howler in No1?

I quote from an item I wrote concerning anchoring in the Mediterranean:

"All anchors have shortcomings - they need scope to work. Plough anchors are common and popular, but need skill to set as they travel a distance before digging into a typical hard sand bottom. Claw anchors (Bruce type) clog easily with rock or weed when setting, and then have to be re-set. Flat anchors (Danforth, Britany, Fortress) are light for their holding power (especially the aluminium alloy Fortress), need a lot of scope, set reasonably easily, but don’t tolerate changes of direction. However, they are very suitable as stern kedges when on a quay, or as a second anchor on a forked moor. Roll bar and other modern anchors (Spade, Bugel, Rocna, Manson, Sword) set very reliably, some on shorter scopes, and tolerate wind shifts well. Form you own conclusions, check the prices, and check which will fit your hawse."

Others people will have different opinions. It is normal for people who have used 'X' type of anchor satisfactorily for many years to claim that 'X' is best, when what they mean is that they have learnt to overcome any shortcomings of 'X' anchors.

Have fun with the subsequent responses. The previous ones weren't very helpful, were they?

Mike, just in case you are puzzled by the responses - this topic has been discussed at length on the forum last year. From all accounts the search facility isn't what it was but give it a go, there is plenty on the topic in the ybw archive (me - I like my Rocna!)

Well I'm not afraid to give an opinion. I've been using a CQR for the last 30 years and don't see any reason to change. If it was good enough for Eric Hiscock that's fine by me.

Having said that, if I were to change to a more modern design to get some benefit from the higher holding power that these offer, it would have to be an anchor that is cheap enough to not worry me if I had to let it go and also would need to be tried and trusted for quite a few years by someone like the RNLI.

I have had a few different types over the years. As has been said some are more suited to one type of seabed or another.

Ask around what the majority of folk in your area are using and go with that for your main Bower anchor then get a totally different type for your second anchor.

Its a fair enough question but unfortunately this thread may be hijacked by some with financial interest in the anchor industry and others who think they know whats best for all of us. For what its worth In the Bristol Channel I have had very good results and able to sleep at night with the Bruce and the CQR.

Delta without a doubt, 10 years ago I took part in trilas with the RNLI with regard a secondary anchor to carry on the Arun class lifeboat.......the Delta won all hands down and I see now 10 years on they seem to be carried on all AWLB's

Paul.

The one which holds a your particular boat, on particular ground in the conditions you encounter. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif..That's why I have 4 including the kedge. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.....Oh! and lots of chain and rode(s). /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Like to know I'm secure (no- don't have one of those) before settling down to watch the sunset with a few beers.

And Yes! They are all anchored to one anchor..although the same people wouldn't dream of rafting up alongside the harbour wall. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Oh my (looks innocent; surely we have never discussed this before?).
Run your own tests, then at least you know what your chosen anchor will do, and how best to use it.
For the record: I understand that "real" Bruces aren't made anymore. I had a (very badly made) copy of a Bruce which gave many happy hours of fun and frolic, including an unplanned tour of Newtown Harbour. Yesterday, despairing of being able to sell it except perhaps as an objet d'art, I had the joy of recycling it through the good offices of the local Council dump. Real Bruces, and perhaps the better made copies, may be more successful.
Have fun.
