Now KevL lives quite close to me. Except I live about 20 miles nearer to Fleetwood than him.

Would think it take him about an hour and a half to get to his boat. But then he can only get out the marina about two hours per tide. There is nearly no where to park outside the marina, less you like mud and no where to go, less its thirty six miles to the Isle of Man. Which IMHO is crap. Or some place Like Whitehaven which is equally crap. On the positive side. Once escape from Fleetwood has been achieved.. Not easy if you do not want to get up in the middle of the night or set off after tea. Especialy if your limited to weekends. Then with either two little hops or one big one. You can be in Strangford Lough in Ireland. Lovely place. Or Port Patrick at tne enterence to the West coast of Scotland. Once quoted as being the best cruising area in Euorope. Only trouble being. That inorder to get to Scotland you have to pass the Mull of Gallway. Now it happends to say on my chart of that area.
"The Mull Of Gallway is dangerous to small boats. The admiraltys definition of a small boat is a Distroyer or Minesweeper"

On the other hand I drive 310 miles to my boat in Plymouth. Record time 4 hours, done three times. Normal four and a half. Some times five. And dont remind me Nine hours to come back last time.

Now most times I dont even have a tide table, nearly never need one. Go out and to nearly anywhere without bothering about tides. If it's rough, I've got 28 miles of rivers and a masive harbour to zoom round. Even visit other towns and marinas with out going ouside the breakwater. Then if I do theres loads of places to go every five miles or so. Then theres Chanel Isles and France.

So which is better.

Is this a Broom thing ?

"The Med has got me" (no not the Medway the other Med)

No Contest.

Fleetwood - twinned with Fleetwood Pennsylvania.
Whitehaven - no twinning arrangements but has a suicide pact with Grimsby.

Fleetwood - the Steamer, the North Euston and if you've lost the will to live - the Fleetwood Arms.
Whitehaven - The Henry Curwen - if you are armed.

Fleetwood - Glasson, Piel, Barrow or upriver- if you haven't much time or don't like it once you are out there
Whitehaven - All destinations need a deal of commitment

Fleetwood - because of your post about going round by Aviemore to get there.
Fleetwood - Freeport for cheap knickers - in case you didn't like it whilst you were out there.
I could go on..... maybe I already am?

Yes No sort of....

Firstly it takes about 1 Hr 5 Mins normally for me to get from home Fleetwood Marina, I have done it in 55 mins a couple of times and the longest it's ever taken is 1.5Hrs. The car park isn't exactly made up I'll give you that but I don't drive my car around it after I get there and there is always plenty of space to park unlike some Marinas I could mention. It's 12 miles to Peel Island for for a pint and an overnight stay but more often than not we just potter out to sea, anchor off Blackpool and have some sarnies or float about for a bit. If we want to go further then it's IOM etc. as you say. The tide times moves by about 6 hours each week so at worst you get to go out at a decent time every second weekend (I normally only use the boat at weekends). Last Saturday the gates were open at 12:20 until 15:20 next Saturday they will be open around 07:30 to 10:30 so it's not as bad as you may think. I don't know how bad the "Mull of Gallway" is as I haven't been but there are plenty of people in the marina who spend weeks cruising around Scotland and I'll be one of them next spring.

I honestly don't envy your drive to visit the boat, I do enough of that through the week but I would like the opportunity to nip over the channel or to the channel islands. The ability to come and go as you please without bothering about the state of the tide would be nice and without a shadow of a doubt you have loads of places to go.

Without a shadow of a doubt it is much cheaper to keep my boat in the north west that down south, a lot cheaper. The Fact that it is only an hour away means that we can go every weekend just for a day if we want which I wouldn't do if I had a 4 hour drive each way.

I'm happy with the Marina and the people are friendly, I get to use my boat as often as I want as long as I work within the tides which isn't really a problem. On the whole this works for me.

Dont think I was trying to have a go at Fleetwood or you Kev. Just trying to understand the different logics. Part of me wishing the boat nearer home and cheaper. But Tutts wont hear of bringing it back up here. Oh yes. I have seen the Mull of Gallway. On a good day it's quite awsome. White water everywhere. They told tales of it flattening the local Customs boat/ship. Ten times bigger than a Broom/ Princess anyway. Treat it with respect and no wind over tide at all. Slack water probably. About a f4 when we went round and that was bad enough.

We've been here before haven't we H?

You were talking of moving the house closer to the boat, i.e to Cornwall and leave Tutt's with a little flat in Accrington. And Dirty Harry to mow her window box.

I have to say, I think all boating is a compromise. You have the choice of long journey/nice cruising Verses short(er) journey/difficult access times.

My boating is mainly Solent, less than 1 hour to boat, no tidal access probs, can go out in any weather (Southampton water is fairly sheltered in most adverse weather)
It's a shortish hop to France, or CI. Weymouth & Poole are only a couple of hours blast along the coast. There are dozens and dozens of harbours/anchorages around IOW & Solent.

The compromise, is the crowds in the summer !!

Even your choice of boat is a compromise Big & comfy (but you have to plan ahead re: booking overnight mooring)
Small & fun, but not much accomodation ( but you can turn up anywhere and squeeze in)

Oh well, can't have it all.

Oh sorry Haydn, I didn't want to give you the impression I was offended at all. Far from it. No, I just thought I would give an honest appraisal of my reasoning in keeping the boat close to home.

I agree with what Col said, it's all a compromise, the trick is to find what suits you best.

See you in Fleetwood sometime
