I wrote the compass refilling article that is in the current issue (January 2014) of PBO. No doubt someone will write in criticising me for using baby oil, but it appears entirely compatible with the Plastimo compass I used it in. It is quite probable that there is nothing broken in a compass where oil has escaped. In most compasses the bellows is retained by a clamping arrangement and slow leakage can occur between the bellows and the body of the compass. As I said in the article baby oil consists of Liquid paraffin and a compound of palm oil. The latter is not required and I think that liquid paraffin BP from a chemist would suit most compasses. I was in Turkey where baby oil was easy to get, so used that. I could have obtained Richie compass oil from West Marine in Marmaris, but did not know whether it was OK for a Plastimo compass.
