I am looking at fitting an electronic compass to my steel hulled yacht. Has anyone experience and/or comments on the best, most efficient, cheapest etc? I will also be fitting a conventional sestrel moore but would like to enter the 21st century----I might even downgrade the Plath by fitting GPS!

Most electronic heading sensors used today are supplied as part of an autopilot system, Raymarine, Simrad-Robertson, B&G etc. The heading data is usually transmitted form the autopilot "computer" to an instrument system, rather than using a standalone electronic compass. There may still be one or two standalone units made, suggest you do an Internet search as I haven't seen them advertised for some time.

On a steel vessel, an electronic heading sensor will have to be mounted on a one metre high non magnetic post or mast.

you can find info about steel boats and electronic compass instalations.
I found a post that detailed successful use of a sensor inside a steel boat!
