Which Eberspacher/Webasto?......

IMO I would never buy an Eberspacher again. Very un-reliable, poor service from agents (tried several - I even sailed the boat 140miles to get to a different agents area!) and Eberspacher themselves could not care less, expensive when you do get it fixed (as happens regularly). When I need to replce I will buy a Webasto or simmilar or anything but an Eberspacher.

5-6 outlets - seems a lot do you realy need this many outlets. I have one in each cabin and each head but the cabin outlets are rarely used even by guests in the winter. total six on a 47 footer.

Anyway look at the manufactures recommendations most units have a MAX outlet count and I'd go with a bigger unit so you have some heat to spare.

Most heater problems are caused by poor installation. Main issue is fuel continuity and cleanliness. Other issues are proper wiring, exhaust configuration keeping wiring controls and electronics dry.
I have a D1LC which works fine, other people have them and have nothing but problems as do people other models and makes

D4 would probably be OK...

An Eberspacher D4 should give sufficient heat for your 36-footer, assuming you're not planning on trips to really cold climes. I have a D3 in my 35-footer, and it copes fine (the D4 has about 20% more heat output than the D3).

The key to success with any air heater is proper installation, and you must follow the manufacturer's instructions to the letter. If you do this, you should get long reliable service. My D3 was factory-fitted, is 17 years old, and has been very reliable. Many of the posts you'll read about Eberspacher problems are the result of poor installation (often of second-hand ex-BT units).

One key point is to get the ducting planned correctly. Eberspacher do a special marine installation guide (download it here) which gives specific guidance on how to calculate losses in ducting. I'd imagine that you would need to use 90mm ducting with a D4 in order to meet Eberspacher's guidelines.

A couple of things I'd certainly recommend are a flexible mount for the fuel pump (to cut down noise) and a duct silencer. Few people bother to specify a duct silencer, but it makes a huge difference to the actual noise level emitted by the vents. With a duct silencer, the heater should be virtually inaudible in operation.

I had an Eberspacher D5L and twice the blower motor brushes wore out. You can't replace the brushes - you have to buy a complete blower unit for about €600. After the second failure I changed to a Wallas heater - at least the parts are much cheaper. Eberspacher in UK and in Germany showed no interest in my problem. The Wallas people in Finland, and their UK dealer Kuranda are very helpful. I bought mine online from SVB.DE - best price and quick delivery.

Wallas is a low pressure burner, as the older (20year) eberspacher /webasto (therefore less noise). But keep de Wallas burning iff the wind in BF8 gives variabele backpressures?
The Wallas may only burn if the unit is horizontal. More then 5 degrees gives coal on the inside until the burner stops, killed itself with a coallayer. Wallas in expensive. (This is about Diesel Wallas)

Hi. We have a Webasto unit fitted to our 36 footer with one outlet in the saloon and one in each of the two cabins. The whole boat heats up very quickly. We have only had two problems which were both easily solved; i) The fuel pipe that goes into our main fuel tank enters at the top and only goes halfway down which is to stop contaminants getting into the heater burner but means that the unit cuts out when the fuel tank is half empty! ii) The solenoid made a ticking noise, like they do, so we mounted it on a piece of rubber so that we could sleep at night. Apart from the above niggles the unit works fine. The unit was cheaper than the Eberspacher and the service guy came out straight away when required. Good luck with your choice.

Thanks very much for the replies. I'll take a look at the Wallas heaters and the Webasto too. Though I might also consider the water heater option and go for radiators as I don't have a calorifier either (yet) but I believe they are more power hungry (water pump).
My problem with the amount of outlets I need is that the boat has an aft saloon, 1 X double and 1 X single cabin amidships and 1 X double up the pointy end making for long runs:

Anyone fitted a Webasto Thermo Top E water heater + radiators to a sailboat? If so what are your impressions?

Cheers,

Crispin.

I retro fitted a Eberpacher D4 into my 41 foot sailing boat, aged 40 years!

It was a horrible job, made worse by the Eberpacher ducting being rubbish, the Mikuni piping is of a much higher quality and I can recommend it.

If you have any fitting issues drop me a PM and I might be able to help out /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

We had a 9.5Kw Webasto (don't know the model number) in our 45' steel mobo. Brilliant bit of kit, totally reliable and servicing was easy and cheap. My only complaint was that it could be a trifle noisy up close to the main unit, which happened to be behind the 'wall' in the main saloon. Otherwise perfect.

Next time my Ebersp goes wrong I will chuck it out and put in something else. I had it new and "professionally installed" . I thought the ducting was dangerous (hot exhaust left in contact with rubber disel filler pipe) and had to get them back, then they failed to fix a diesel leak and left the boat stinking and half a litre of diesel in the bilges .. eventually I fixed it myself. after about 6 letters of complaint I eventually got an answer and 3 years free servicing. The retched thing broke down again after a year (loose wire) and then last year the CPU (about £250) failed. It is now 3+ years old and I've just found out why one of the outlets runs so cold (pathetic attempt at a pipe joint behind a panel). The salesmanship was "somewhat" better than the product and the installation was absolutely terrible. I'm still furious. Enough said?

pity you are blaming the product because of crappy service, i fitted mine myself and it has worked perfectly for the last 5 years!

I had to make this same choice in January.

My experience is too short to make a recommendation on product, but what I do recommend is that you serch these fora for user feedback!

I did and very quickly concluded that one name had a very poor reputation for service.

Good luck with your choice
