I'm still flying over land and using the virtual training on the DJI app. We've had constant 20mph wind in Cornwall for about 6 months
Edit, but of course it's a great place for a holiday !!!!

We are only just up the road in Devon - yes the wind and rain have been relentless for a long time now.
If I see a Phantom flying past, I will assume that it is out of control in the strong winds!!
Oh yes, I had forgotten that there is a virtual training app - I'll investigate - I bet I can crash a virtual drone as well!!

A friend of mine who was impressed by the videos made by scubaman in CF is considering to buy the thing, but since he's not very interested in techy details, he asked me what to go for.
In principle, I was thinking to recommend him the very same setup scubaman has (3 Advanced, backpack, spare battery), but just for the sake of checking also the other models available, I had a look at DJI website.
And that got me thinking, because it looks like the three versions (Standard, Advanced and Professional) are actually the same thing!
I mean, look at the camera specs: same sensor size and Mp (12), same lens (f2.8/20mm equivalent), same ISO range, same shutter, same image size... WTF?
Makes me think that they just used a different firmware on the P to offer the 4k video shooting.
Btw, the S and the A are not limited to FHD resolution, because they can shoot also 2.7k video, so the option of cropping the clips to get a final FHD video applies also to them, though to a smaller extent obviously.
The only other difference I could find between the S and the A is that the 60fps option is available only in HD on the S, and also in FHD on the A.
But again, it looks like a software trick.
Bottom line, I wonder if at FHD there is any quality difference between the three, because on paper I can't see where such differences could come from.

Actually, I think there is a big difference between the Standard and the Advanced/Pro
For example, I understand that the remote controller is completely different.
But the difference between the Advanced and the Pro is only the camera resolution (4k vs 1080)

The hand set is very much advanced in A and P, and the video downlink has far more reach. Light bridge is a world apart versus gen 2....

I haven't looked into the details but in theory the difference in price could come from the processor to allow for the higher res, etc. More likely to be just a firmware thing as you mentioned.
Would the friend happen to be anyone I met?

Doh! I didn't even look at the "remote" section of the specs, since I expected more relevant video/optical differences.
But you are correct, just about everything is different in the remote - frequency, battery, voltage...
The max range is day and night, according to the specs: 500m vs. 3500!
Btw, the FCC version has even higher range (1000 and 5000 respectively) than the CE, apparently. More strict limits on max RF power, I suppose...

I lost my first phantom down our creek at what I reckon was 300 metres, (went into 'safe' mode and dipped into water killing wifi). Shame, but very funny watching Ann trying to wade out to it before it came down
The pro / advance seem to be pretty future proof, (I know that's not the right term), in that the firmware is being updated well by DJI, and the 4K should keep resolution junkies happy for a couple of years....

Personally, I'd prefer that they ditch the 4k and focus on a higher dynamic range sensor as that's what all the TV broadcasters and manufacturers believe gives a better picture. But hey, one can always bang a decent camera like an Alexa M on a drone these days.

Yep, having seen the Phantom gimbal system I also don't think it could be easily adapted to another camera.
st599 indeed has a point, though: the more obvious limitation of its embedded camera is in the dynamic range.
In several occasions, when shooting a white boat, illuminated by the sun and floating on deep blue waters, the details of the boat are lost.
No big deal, the videos are still great, but that's one camera feature which could be improved, imho.

Just to finish thread as far as I'm concerned, in the end I bit the bullet and bought a Phantom 3. I just have to lie about the price now!
