Hi all
Whats the best paint to apply as a boot top
I don't really want to use antifoul as that just discolours, dries and looks a bit rough.

I used Blakes. Put the boot top on first and lap the antifoul onto it. If you do it the other way round you create a path for moisture to wick up behind ther boot top and you'll get a rash in the paint.

Whatever *hard* antifoul suits - I use Trilux on the boot-top and Uno for the rest.

This year, I splashed out and gave the rudder a coat of trilux too, as the scouring from grounding (drying mooring) had worn through the 2 coats of Uno - donno whether it has worked or not - yet.

Boot top. Is there a reason for it/them?

As I looked at my peeling/flaking boot top at the weekend I was debating the reasons for them. Does a boot top serve any real purpose? Mine seems to allow weed growth so I had thought of extending the AF upwards? Pros/Cons?
Having seen Lakesailors very nice paint job maybe I should keep it on..

Any input greatly received.

I used Blakes boot-topping, but am not very pleased with it. Completely green and slimy, while the Jotun antifoul below it is more or less clean.

Well. It doesn't prevent weed growth, but it disguises it so your boat doesn't have a "soft" waterline and when you scrub it off the boot top remains.
I did apply a hard antifoul boot top on my powerboat, but that's fine if you are using hard antifoul. Hardly worth the cost if you are buying it just for the boot top.
On Slippy I used Blakes Waterway antifoul for fresh water. That is a bit harder than an normal erodable and worked well enough.
The point about dried-out antifoul is very pertinent. Gloss does look the biz.

Garage floor paint?

As far as I know boot-topping paint has no antifouling properties but is just a very tough paint intended to withstand hard scrubbing.

I have aways used Blakes boot topping but it is very expensive and I have wondered if another cheaper but tough paint such as 'garage floor paint' would do the job just as well.

Anyone tried this?

I discussed this with a man on the Blakes stand at the boat show a couple of years ago. He said that the boot top paint was the same strength as their standard antifouling (I forget which specific product), and therefore it is a type of antifouling. He also said the main difference between boot top paint and normal antifouling is the boot top stuff contains more pigments, and hence holds its colour better.

I've used Blakes boot top for the past 4 yrs, and generally been pleased with it.

I used Blakes to boot top last year and it still seems good over a year later.

I also put it on my prop...... big mistake, barnacles seemed to love it whereas a polished prop the year before, with a bit of hot beeswax was almost clean.
This year I polished and forgot the beeswax and seemed pretty clean when recently hauled out...... apologies, I digress.
