If we ever find the money to move up, the three boats that have caught our eye are the Westerly Merlin (bilge), Beneteau 285 and Kelt 8.5 (lifters). We've had a look on all of them and they all meet our criteria for accommodation. I believe from what i have read that they have at least a reasonable performance. They can all take the ground, which is a must as my mooring dries on springs. Can anyone from their experience answer the following, which concern me more than SWMBO.

Realistic cruising speed under sail?
Likewise under power?
Ability in heavier weather?

It will frequently be used for local / coastal sailing, but i want something for cross channel passages too.
Have i missed any others that fit in this general catagory ie £25 - £30k, take the ground and sail well?

Cheers

Can only speak for Merlin, cross channel not a problem have done 4 crossings in one.Ranging from force 3 to 6 gusting 8.
Points surprisingly well and motion manageable, responds well to early reefing.
