As a mobo owner converted from a yachttie and now thinking of returning from the dark side so I can eat instead of buy diesel, this is my question. Now I don't monitor the raggie forums so if this has been done to death then just point me to the thread and I will go away but most of what I read is a debate between the custom build Swedish brigade and the AWB people. I am pretty sure I think AWBs are good value so PLEASE don't hijack the thread to debate this. My question is - for - say 80-100K, 36-39 foot, cruising solent and channel, not racing, single or couple handed, happy up to a good 6 with a bit of 7 in it what should I buy - Bavaria, Beneteau, Jenneau,, Dehler or what?

I retire behind my bulletproof wall and await incoming fire

Starlight 35.

Your a Hardy owner... you will want something a bit proper... 80-100k will get you a good Starlight... UK boat... fast.. fun.. easy to manage.. well laid out... solid.. good space..

Just an excellent boat.. I cant think of a better choice at that budget.

You have plenty of choices, and boat layout is a personal thing. For a distictive and in my opinion nice looking boat take a look at this Dawn 39. http://www.interyacht.co.uk/
I have no idea how well built it is, as it seems to have been fitted out by the owner but it looks nice in the photos.

You will have to search their website for a Dawn 39 to find it, because all pages on their site return the same URL

Any of those give you a lot of boat for your money with a good and buoyant second hand market. You can't go far wrong with a second hand one of them and your budget will get you a very good one which is well equipped. They will do want you are looking for.

If you want to go around the world or across the Atlantic in hurricane season then you should get something else. If you decide its not for you, you can easily sell again without losing too much money.

Not that you would ever catch me in one of those though........

I've come from a motorboat background and I ended up buying a Legend 36, so obviously I would say add a Legend to the list of AWBs that you should consider.

A few people knock Legends on here for no reason but they are good boats. They are very good for cruising and are the USA's equivalent of the Jans/Bavs/Bens. Better in fact in my opinion.

It just so happens that I have one for sale and, if you are interested in what one looks like, take a look at my advert on eBay (lots of piccys).

Don't think you will be disappointed with any of them - bit llike choosing between a Ford and a VW. Key things for me would be age - younger the better, equipment and most importantly SWMBO approval. There is, however a shortage of good late model boats because many have been snapped up by Europeans and poor new boat sales mean less trade ins. Starlight is a good suggestion - however, again few on the market, high price and starting to get old.

Ah yes Michael - let me put on record that if I am on hols and I get the chance to jump aboard, for example a 51 foot gaff rigged pilot cutter then I won't take a lot of encouragement
