Which Almanac ?

I'm about to buy this year's Almanac.

Historically I've always bought the full Reed's publication. For the last couple of years I've saved a few quid by buying the cutdown ring bound Reed's Channel Almanac, which has been perfectly adequate for my needs, although this seems unavailable from all the usual outlets at the moment.

I see that Amazon are offering the "Reeds Practical Boat Owner Small Craft Almanac 2007" which is about 12 quid versus 30 something for the full publication.

With a one year old and another on the way on board, our crusing range will be very limited this year I doubt we'll leave the Solent, so realistically I'll probably only need tidal tables for the Solent, pilotage info for the Solent ports/harbours and an aide memoire for buoyage, lights, chart data etc.

Anyone have experience of the Reeds Small Craft Almanac and care to offer an opinion as to whether it will be sufficient for my modest requirements ?

If you are not leaving the Solent, then why would you need an almanac?
Last years will be more than adequate. Pick up some tide tables at a chandlers and save yourself £20

I use an almanac for two purposes - firstly as a source for tides and so on and secondly for the pilotage/passage notes and local information.

The small boat almanac is fine for the first but not so good for the second. I bought it last year as a way of getting up to date tide information and continued to use the old CA almanac for the pilotage info.

This year I've bought the full Macmillan again - next year I will probably go back to the small boat....

I take your point, but as a consequence of an unpleasant event that would not have occurred if SWMBO had not disobeyed my explicit instructions not to use the chart table as a baby changing facility, my copy of last year's almanac is far from adequate. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I ordered the Western Almanac from Amazon, at a good price. They were showing it in stock but after my order cleared the tracking showed a dispatch date some 6 weeks later, end of march. Wife has had the same experience. In the end I cancelled. Gave the local chandler the business on the basis that I got a good price on an inflatable.

Re: Which Almanac ? re: P Broadley

On amazon I got the full reeds almanac for about £20 rather than the usual £30+. It was described as 'used' but arrived in pristine condition.

Likewise but my 1 year-old copy full reeds with waypoint guide in pristine cost me a tenner.

Dissapointed with last years PBO/REEDS, the tides for Brest in June were wrong! almost got me into trouble in the Chenel du Four, amazed at the error.

I believe they got Oban wrong as well.

Still, they do give updates on their website.

I Bought the biggie a couple of years ago, and the PBO one last year which I found perfictly adequate for my sailing, so PBo one again this year.

Getting things wrong seems to be a modern disease. I've had to point out 3 glaring errors in the updates to Imray charts over the last year or so. One was even for a DIFFERENT CHART
