We’re the happy owners of a Sealine S34, but time and tide stand still for no man. Fingers crossed our youngest will be off to university; and we will be rattling around in house that is bigger than we need. Our plan over the next year or so is to put the house on the market, and downsize. This will hopefully release funds for another boat. How much will depend on exactly how much we get for our house, and how much we spend on the new one.

Hopefully; sale and house and of the S34 will give a boat fund of c£150k - £200k. The eventual plan will be to berth in the Med; though not within the lifetime of our dog. Dog lovers can be assured he is looking healthy; and has a few years in him yet.

We both love ‘targa style’ boats, and had been looking at a hard top till we read the ‘Hard Top Med Why?’ thread – which we thought raised some good points; and made us think we were buying a boat for the UK

We would like to switch to shafts. We use the boat all the year round, so we are starting to think of joining the senior (older) members of the forum in moving to a flybridge in the 42 – 50ft range; (subject to funds). On sunny days, the fly will give a sunbathing platform with a cool breeze, when it’s less clement we can hunker down behind the patio doors.

We will almost certainly be looking at Princess or Fairline; but suggestions of Azimut, Ferretti, Riviera etc will be gratefully received, as tbh I am sad enough to like looking at the pics on broker websites.

We want 2 cabins (one for guests) but I like the idea of a 3rd cabin for storage/ occasional extra guests. I quite like the idea of a Fairline Phantom 46, or a Princess 45 (for the third cabin), probably running TAMD-74s/ 75s, as although they appear to be dirtier than the D6s; I read concerns re: the long term maintenance cost of the D6s; and we will likely be buying a 10+ year old boat. At the top end of the budget, might be able to stretch to a Fairline Phantom with D12s … but I’ve no idea if that’s a good choice or not.

Does this sound realistic? Are there any models/ engine configuration that people would recommend? Are there any to avoid? PMs welcome.

I’m sure by the time I’ve digested the advice, we’ll end up buying something entirely different - but that’s all part of the fun/ kind of the point of asking :)

Thanks in advance

I'm surprised that this thread has not enjoyed more traffic? I'm in the Azi/Ferri camp.

I am put off replying by the concept of taking equity out of the UK property mkt and putting it in another more expensive boat ,considering the OP allready as suitable boat .
Then loosing that said equity in depreciation as opposed to gaining appreciation on the original capital if it was left in the Uk property .
Alternatively if he HAS to down size ,fair enought ,then buy the Uni kid - property in Uni Ville - ( except London £200 k is too light ! )
1- to save. £ on " dead rent "
2- to make £ renting other rooms to fellow students
3- capital appreciation
4 -cash cow when kid graduates .
5- put it in kids name -bypass Uk IHT and when 2nd or 3rd are 18 add them on to the deeds .

So that's why I,am not egging him on ------ to buy another boat .- with equity released from family home -based on the info given .

Uh oh, thread drift alert!! Funnily enough, I'm investing in our third property simply to buy a boat! Planning a move to Corfu in 5 yrs ish...Got some cash for a deposit on a buy to let. Should make a profit of c£200 pcm which goes into savings. Sell the flat in 5 yrs to hopefully make some capital gain, buy second boat in Corfu.

I won't get that return on investment anywhere else, and it's a means to an end. I don't intend to die rich, I intend to die having led a rich life :)

Buy the boat, enjoy it :)

And for me - if I was the op I'd spend a bit less and go for a solid Princess 480 :)

I borrowed to buy a BTL and a boat (we have other BTL's and lots of equity so no big deal). Appreciation on the BTL will cover the depreciation on the boat and the rent on the BTL will cover the interest payments for the whole loan. So boating for free!

It was Deleted User's SWMBO's idea (I think as I was a bit pissed at the time). However, it seems to be working out fine (property bought 15 months ago at a great price and yield).

My advice to DazzyWoo would be to buy a boat that's already got a Med spec as he won't want to spend a further £20k on adding Genset, A/C, etc. And buy one that won't depreciate much.

Agreed. An Azimut AZ46 would fit the bill and its a lot bigger inside than the Princess 45 and especially the Phantom 46. You get nice Cat engines and Kohler gennie too. I hesitate to recommend a Ferretti for the UK because there are very few for sale in the UK although loads in the Med of course but given that the OP's eventual destination is the Med they might be worth a look. The obvious Ferretti model to look at is the 480 which is a lovely boat and would be my choice in this size range but then I'm biased

Portofino/ rossavage / petem / Deleted User –We’ve put our money into the property where we live, rather than a BTL; on the rationale that we get to enjoy it; without the hassle / additional costs of a BTL. With the kids leaving home, and myself or my wife being away (either with work or on the boat) we really don’t need a house this size. We just want a smaller house.

You do make a good point though – that’s what I love about this forum, lots of wise heads. I should do the maths on getting a BTL; and using the income / (assumed) appreciation to fund a boat. We will be getting boat. After all, you can’t go cruising in a BTL. I will have to do some research!

Anyway back to boats…

Gentlemanracer - nice website, thanks

Re: spec – would get a med spec’ed boat, and would consider purchasing from overseas.

I am now happily googling Princess 480s, AZ46s, & Ferretti 480s – after a cursory search; I have to say I rather like the AZ46

Re: CATs – are there particular units that are recommended?

Thanks for the feedback.

She's full of ideas. The trick is to recognise the pearls amongst all the dogs;)

So...purely looking on the broker sites:

I like the AZ 46 with CATs; but looked at a boat with CATs before and the servicing options in the UK seemed a bit limited / expensive; or is that just my lack of knowledge on where to go? Are there more options in south of France / Spain / Italy etc?

I also like the Fairline Phantom 50 with D12s. Having read through most of YBW MB Forum - the D12 seem one of volvo's better efforts. Is this is good combo?

I can see the attractions of the Ferretti; I just dont think the internal layout would suit us; and the P 480 just seems a bit old (maybe an emotional issue, rather than rational one!)

Phantom 50 is a lovely boat but you're looking at £25k a year to park, service and clean it in the Balearics. That's before depreciation, fuel or any repairs. Apartment and day boat might be an alternative for you?

Finnings try to monopolise Cat servicing and parts for the leisure market. However parts and service is available from non marine suppliers at sensible prices.

Another option is the Jeanneau Prestige 46. Three cabins all with beds rather than bunks and a clever layout in a massive saloon. We love ours, two kids and two dogs. Popular in the med. There are deals to be had but ot quite what they were since the pound has weakened.

True, they do not have the same finish as Princess/Fairline but they have lovely Cummings engines and are well put together. Just a thought.

There is a 2003 one on boatbid.com bidding has reached 140,000 pounds with two days to go

Yes Finnings are the sole UK Cat dealer. Actually they're not too bad on parts but you certainly dont need to use their service. There are plenty of experienced technicians about who can service Cat engines

How about slightly bigger ?

Have a look at this San Lorenzo 72... can it be true ?
Yes it is, or better said, it was. She sold a couple of weeks ago, but it was a repo boat, in desperate need of heavy maintenance works.
Still a good deal probably, but I didn't even go to see her, because 60 feet or so for me is already big enough as a headache, I don't need a bigger one! :D

Also the pics in the ad were not of the actual boat but a much newer 72. I still want one but I cannot persuade the SWMBO!
