We are selling a Dufour 30 Classic ( http://www.yachtsnet.co.uk/boats/t61617/t61617.htm ) which is a jolly nice little cruiser but really is not what I'd call - as you asked for - "Tough as old boots. Fast" and suitable for "racing to epic expeditions".
You need to go 1970s/80s designs to get what you want at the price you want, or ease up parts of the criteria. No reason an older boat should be smelly, by the way.....

As i said I have a 1990 boat that doesn't smell! I have just nosed round quite a a lot of old boats that do! I have a year or two to ponder. Thatas the fun bit!

Get yer erse through to Kip this weekend and sniff round what's available. It'll give you an idea of what your ever shrinking £s might get you. Remember to budget for all the offshore gear you will need to find or replace.

Compared to our Trapper 240 a lot heavier. Yeah she is a lively but not like a 1\4 tonner. Hull mould was pinched from Aphrodite 291 a well respected racer designed by Carl Beyer.. I have some knackered sails but find up to about 20 knots we can carry full sail. Found when racing need to lose the anchor and chain out of the chain locker.and empty the water tank and she will surf down wind in control despite not having a big wide bum.Up wind very nicely balanced on the helm and doesnt slam. Needs to be driven hard up wind makes much better speed a few degrees off into a the steeper stuff.but that is probably my knackered sails.Ours is lead wing keel with 10hp, If racing is priority I would go for deep fin which Is cast Iron. 10 hp is adequate äs hull is easily driven. If you are 6 foot try all the berths fir size. I love the king sized aft open plan berth. Google Yacht White Mischief to see one that has been well campaigned..

Yes theres an Elan 31, a Hanse 301, a Fulmar, a Dufour 30 classic, a Sigma 33 and a Moody 336 to look at!!

I presume the question is about a 30 something ft sail boat in bad weather. Our own Jon Sanders is just completing his 10th circumnavigation about half of which were done in SS34. Obviously a few bad storms in Southern Ocean. Here in Oz they seem to be a boat of choice for circumnavigations, several other records have been broken in them. A local Spacesailer 27 completed a circumnavigation so don't let size deter you from any potential bad weather. Mostly it is up to you and your own stamina. olewill

Looked at the one at Kip today. Looked great.
Was going to compare with the Elan 31 but already sold to someone at our club!!
Sigma 33 looked fun if you had a lot of time on your hands for upgrading....!

I am fairly sure that one has been on the market for quite some time. There were a couple around here on the market but they went pretty quickly.
There is a 292 in Holyhead Open plan to foecabin otherwise very similar to 301 Deep fin and 18hp engine good price.
