Whether weather works

I've been listening to the forecasters talk of storm weather on its way. Went to the bbc weather site and looked at Falmouth for today. It forecasts max wind 13(s), yet latest observation (only 1.9kms away) says 20(SW) already.

I've been looking at the same thing for Portsmouth for a few days now and the forecast for the day seems to wildly underestimate the wind compared with the live observation. The forecast is the early morning one, when presumably data is taken from observation point anyway. So why the difference?

The Meat Orifice boys would have you believe that their forecast is for the averaage windspeed, and that gusts can be expected which exceed that.

Which sounds like an excuse to me.

Weather site www.theyr.net gives a much more informative picture. It shows that the low that is approaching is intense but small and fast moving. There is a big difference in predicted windspeeds over a realitively small geographical area. I guess that for this situation it is difficult to give an accurate picture with the summary type weather forecast which gives one figure for one location.

It looks like North Wales is going to be a bit breezy, with a brief period of F9. I hope all Pwllhelites are well battened down. It's predicted by Theyr to be all over by Saturday.

Have a look at the UK Windmap at xcweather.co.uk for really up to date reports. I am writing this at 12.20 and already the reports for 12.10 are up. Incidentally the report from Culdrose is S anything between 16 and 31 mph.

I'm fairly dependent on good weather forecasts as I both Landyacht (can't overcome friction in less than 5 knots of wind, need brown trousers if the wind gets above 20 knots) and Glide (don't fly if it so much as drizzles), and have found that Metcheck.com consistently outperform all the competition by a significant margin. They also give more detail than most.

Current forecast from bbc weather is 14(s) for today in Falmouth. Observation station (1.9kms away) is now saying 34(s). So they got the direction right anyway!
