Whereabouts of \"Cariad\"

A close S African acquaintance of mine, currently living in Perpignan is eager to try and discover the whereabouts and current owner(s) of this vessel. He has some of the original drawings and photos taken during her re-build in Capetown between 1967-73.
He and 5 others than took her on the Capetown/Rio then round most of the rest of the world until '75. She was then sold in the UK.

CARIAD" was designed and built by Summers & Payne, of Southampton,in 1895 for Lord Dunraven.
100' loa (exc bowsprit) she was specifically built for racing Kaiser Wilhelm. Reviews appeared several times in "YW". Last heard of c1993 in Japan.

Re: Whereabouts of "Cariad"

She's still in Japan. Burnette listed her awhile back in CB. Oyster's Brokerage page has her listed as well last I saw...

Ciao,
Joe

Re: Whereabouts of \"Cariad\"

I am Mike Burnett of Classic Yachts and Tall Ships Brokerage. We relocated from England to Brittany, France, a couple of years ago. I am deeply involved with Cariad (which by the way is 108 ft. on deck, not 100 and was built for Lord Dunraven on Queen Victoria's instructions). She is in Tokyo still, in parlous condition. I was instructed to sell her but the owners, a committee of 20 Japanese men, are convinced that they will obtain sponsorship to have her renovated in Thailand under my supervision. I hope they will succeed in raising the funds for her but there are many obstacles in achieving this.

I have done much research on Cariad and have four of the original plans for her plus a rare copy of a book, in Swedish, unfortunately for me, recounting her 1920's cruise under the then name of 'Fidra'. I would be most interested in making contact with your South African colleague to fill in some of the gaps in her history.

Hi,

I hope you can help?

I have recently bought Cariad and will be restoring her over the next year, can you help with any history? copies of plans/pictures etc?

I would really appreciate it.

Thanks, Stuart.

Interesting!

I've just returned home from a visit to the Bristol Harbour Boatfest ( Sunday 30 July ), and there among several other well-known Bristol Channel Pilot Cutters is a beautifully rebuilt and well-equipped gaffer named 'Cariad'.

Would Classic Boat enthusiasts tell us which is the real and which is the unreal one.....?

Possibly of interest

Hi all,

Just come across this thread through dear old Google. I'm trying to find out about Cariad / Fidra as I believe that my Great Grandfather was the skipper employed by Frank Chaplin to run her. Any information that you may have would be gratefully received.

Regards

David
