Where to waive at the Dover ferries?

Perhaps someone who knows Dover well can help me on this.

We are travelling down to Dover on Wednesday to to say goodbye to younger son who is currently cycling from Aberdeen to South Korea. Yes, I know but his response was "Why do it the easy way Dad?"

Mother would like to waive him off as the ferry leaves. Can anyone tell me, are the harbour walls open to the public or else does the Port have somewhere we can waive at the ferry as it leaves?

Not knowing the area, perhaps someone can also recommend a reasonably priced restaurant for lunch?

If anyone is interested, his website http://www.capersofcapers.co.uk is telling the story of his journey.

Thanks all,
Tony

follow the signs to visit Dover castle, go up hill, past visitors entrance, just past the coach park park on left as you go up hill and turn right for white cliffs, follow narrow road and turn into car park for cafe. car park is directly above ferry terminal with a great view!

I cannot think of an easy option for waving off a ferry at Dover, all the harbour walls are the wrong side of passport control. You can walk down an old tramway platform cut into the cliff from close to the car park that Rumtotty mentions but you are still some distance from the terminal and eastern harbour entrance.

Just a thought.

There are always people on the outer wall whenever I've been into Dover - Is there a foot ferry? If so you could stand at the eastern entrance and waive as the ferry leaves...

Why not have a day trip to Calais while you are there, search Daily Mail offers around £20 for a car and 5.

Thats the best idea.

Some of our friends came on the ferry to party when we set off on honeymoon riding to Gibraltar.
They didn't get off, just stayed in the bar for the return trip.....

There is a cafe at the end of the Prince of Wales pier which is accessible on foot, so maybe not all of the harbour walls are beyond passport control?

The harbour wall is not the same as a pier within the harbour. PoW pier is towards the western side of the harbour, most ferries leave from the eastern exit which is some distance away (it would need to be a big 'goodby' banner)

I've never noticed anyone on the Eastern arm, and have no idea how you would get it if there was public access.

However in this:

http://www.doverport.co.uk/_assets/client/images/collateral/Access Guide Final.pdf

it says:

'In the Eastern Docks, fishing is restricted to the designated section of the Eastern Arm only, as clearly
signed. No fishing is permitted from any other area of the Eastern Docks.'

So it looks as though it might be possible, but you may not be able to get onto the bit next to the entrance. Can't find anything else about public access on their site, but it may well be there.

When I last fished in the docks (many years ago) we were along the western arm, but a boat trip was available onto the central pier, so long as you were prepared to be out there for hours.

Perhaps it is worth emailing the harbour authority.

Thanks for your input guys, we did think about crossing for the day but he has to do this without Mum following. Ended up saying our goodbyes on the beach:

Spent all yesterday afternoon running around for him to find a phone that his new global sim card would work with - nothing like leaving things to the last moment! Whilst I have told him that he is on his own from now, I suspect that I shall be sending things Poste Restante to various places around the world for some time to come.
