Hi all
I am bringing my Moody 44 back from Spain this year. I will be heading to the Hamble my intention is to remove the mast and have all the standing rigging replaced. Where would you suggest i would take off the mast at reasonable prices. Also is there a rigger near to get all the fittings etc or should i go to Jimmy green.
Thanks

Just about any of the marinas will be able to help you. I had work done by Advanced Rigging in HYS last year. Happy to recommend. I also had some work done in Plymouth. Plymouth was much cheaper (for everything) than the Solent . So perhaps get the work done on your way back and save a few quid?

Another option would be to go to Swanwick, There are still a few of the ex-moody chaps like Dave Hancock and Paul Carey around, working freelance. out of there.

Berthon in Lymington, several yards in Cowes, HYS Port Hamble. Hamble Point, there is a rigger onsite I think. Deacons at the top of the Hamble has a rigger. Shamrock Quay, Saxon Wharf. Port Solent all possible.

I'm sure there is more. I guess it kind of depends how involved you want to be.

When I wintered in Emsworth Yacht Harbour for many years I had my mast lifted out each time and the yard tea were very efficient at doing it.

Emsworth Marina are good but the OPs' boat would only get over the cill at highish tides - there's a tide guage reading feet over the cill outside so use bino's from a distance.

Thornham ' Marina ' in Chichester Harbour ( in reality a very good boatyard with a few tatty pontoons ) should be good but you'd have to get in and out at the top of the tide.

Hayling Yacht Co should be OK.

Unless things have changed watch out for Northney Marina - good access at all but MLWS, but one of our club boats went there at lift-out time and was kept waiting 5-6 hours while the marina scrabbled around for someone skilled and insured to handle masts !

Gosport Boatyard are usually good value, worth a try.

Good choice in Portsmouth Harbour. You can get the mast unstepped at Gosport Boat Yard and have a choice of XW Rigging or Jerry the Rigger. or go up to Port Solent and have Martin Leaning do it.

I would get quotes, you have a pretty standard boat that they must all have worked on before.

HYCo .... dries out at the mast derrick ....

Thornham .... I liked it there when it first opened up ... but lack of water is a problem.

There is one company I would avoid from my experience (and from two others who have also used them) or at least satisfy yourself that you won’t have the same problems. They operate in the Solent and will give a low quote.
I don’t want to name them on a public forum as they may have provided good service to others but if you pm me I will give you the facts

Plus 1 for Gosport BY however if you want to meet either of riggers mentioned you might need some spare units of time to fill as I have heard it said their time keeping is somewhat erratic . Jerry is much in demand which might account for timing issues . I believe he does ARC work so maybe that’s a source of info but if you can track him down he would be my preferred choice .

To answer the question about taking the mast off at reasonable prices then drivers dry berthing www.dryberthing.com are always reasonable. They are as far as you can get up the itchen on the right bank.

There are riggers nearby in William st but I don't have a mast, the work they've done for me for guardrails, dinghy strops etc has been great but not enough for a recommendation.

I had my standing rigging replaced last March by Allspars at Swanwick Marina (Hamble). They were the best priced of any of the "proper" rigging companies in the Solent, and the service was excellent. My berth is on the river, and I just drove the boat up to the dock, they removed the mast, and I drove the boat back to its mooring. Same for re-stepping. So I didn't get any marina fees except the crane fees. Can happily recommend them.
