Sorry not boaty but dont think I would get a responce from the lounge. I am looking for a 4* ish hotel for weekend north essex/suffolk not modern and easy walk of restaurants and pubs. Let the power of the forum prevail. If you think this is not the place let me know and I wil cancel the thread.

Probably one of the best places to put it, but you may not get super speedy replies.
Can you narrow the area down ? or are you looking at a wide area deliberately ?

The Bull at Long Melford (a bit more than an hour away). There is an excellent gastropub with rooms at Cavendish west of Long Melford on the A1092 - The George.

Also a bit further but heading west is The Greyhound at Albury near Tring. (website)

An hour or so would also get you to Whitstable. The Continental Hotel is nice with seafront rooms looking at Southend and good food in the hotel or in the town. A visit to Faversham from there would be good - the longest medieval street in England apparently and a mudpluggers paradise at the quay.

The Maison Talbooth in Dedham is right on the Essex?suffolk border. Haven't been there for many years, but it used to be superb , but not cheap!

Late entry does it Ipswich was the only one that would do the right deal on a decent room.

Thanks to you all I am sure we will try them all over time.

Will report back if you want.
