We want to anchor in the Rada Di Portoferraio (Elba) but can't fathom out where we would park the dinghy if we want to go into town. The Imray pilot doesn't give any clues. Any ideas?

When we were there 3 years' ago, there was a derelict yard with an open gate just east of the coop. Left the dinghy there with no problems.

+1 You can usually see a dinghy or two tied up there. Fence ends in from water and easy to walk around, then through open gate and up side of building to Coop across the road. Shortest way to supermarket but long walk to town

Take dinghy into town and tie up at end of pontoon in harbour. We usually turn right before the end and drop off rubbish at recycling bins by the roadside before going back to the pontoon.

Harbour authorities also let you take a berth and fill with water for 5 Euro. We called to ask and people in next berth were doing the same. They said that they usually came in before lunch, took on water, paid and had lunch before leaving in late afternoon. We thought that was unfair on anyone actually looking for a berth for the night.

You will find a Crai supermarket near the pontoon. Cross the road, through archway to right and turn left. Nowhere near as good as the Coop and also closed in afternoon.

I can probably pm lat/long where we anchored (good free WiFi using our Alfa) and position to leave dinghy for Coop.

Make sure you anchor well away from the ferry turning area, to the farthest extent possible. Many yachts whose owners thought they were perfectly safe have been towed away by the harbourmaster, facing not only a fine but also towing charges. Probably a scam but most certainly a fact.

We took our dinghy into the main quay but that was a good few years ago, so maybe some things have changed.

We had a visit from Carabinieri on one stop. No problem with where we were anchored and they didn't seem to be bothered about all the yachts actually in the turning area. They did try to fine us for incorrect insurance documentation and did the same to at least one other UK yacht. We told them our documents were correct but they refused to hand them back so we could find the relevant parts. Our documents were incorrect so had to be retained, catch 22. Fortunately, we read out from our copies point by point and they decided all OK and left (but obviously disappointed).

We did see yachts being asked to move on another stop but a small freighter turned up later and went alongside past the area leading to Coop. Yachts were obviously in the way that night. Best to stay clear as you say to avoid trouble.
