Where to overwinter around the Baltic?

We hope to explore parts of the Baltic next season and would welcome suggestions of where we might leave the boat over the winter, perhaps within the Stockholm area but not necessarily; RyanAir access might be advantageous.

I'd suggest Lubeck, or rather, Travemunde, which is just next to it. Ryanair fly there - they call it Hamburg (Lubeck), but it's actually Lubeck airport. Travemunde's a lovely place to be, so's Lubeck. Travemunde is a short bus/train/taxi ride away from Lubeck. Facilities are excellent.

It's much warmer than leaving your boat in Stockholm, and the sailing season is a month or two longer.

There're several good yards you can leave your boat at. One of them (though not the cheapest) is Boebs Werft. I think there are cheaper yards further upriver closer to Lubeck, but facilities will be more basic and less cafes to hang out. If you want to go for a cheaper option, also look at East Germany - Greifswald, Heiligendam etc. Greifswald in particular is lovely. But not so convenient for Ryanair.

There's also the BKYC if you want expat community, I think they can do winter storage - at least they used to, but facilities are much more basic, and less attractive surroundings, lack of cafes, chandlers etc.

Rigas quite good just across from Sweden you will be assured of an interesting "baltic" reception

Swedens and Denmark all cost a fortune as the SEK is peged to the euro

Did you find Travemunde full, or was it just the yard in Greifswald? I'd be surprised if Travemunde was full - I just turned up in November and they had space...

Finland a good & safe option, try around Helsinki or Hanko for full service yards. Lot cheaper than Germany or Sweden.

5 months storage at Greifswald was £218 (ie. £44 a month) for outside storage, or £434 for inside a shed - for a 32 footer 2 years ago.

Travemunde's noticeably more expensive - about 1.3x - 1.8x that, depending on yard.

I used Strahlwefte in Stralsund last year - boat was there for five months, stored outside. Everything was fine when I got back. I think the cost was in the region of 600 euros including lifting, scrubbing and relaunch.

Regret there is no easy answer. The former GDR offers some good facilities, but the further north you go the more limited it seems to become together with airport options. Although sailing is as popular, if not more so, than the UK there seems to be very few commercial facilities that one has come to expect in the UK & France. Most are private or self help. We presently overwintering in Karlskrona and had job finding somewhere to store a Moody 47 and I anticipate it will be more difficult next year. I would suggest you join the Cruising Assoc. They have a very active Baltic section that offers lots of info and exchanges. Well worth the sub. the area is well worth cruising, although the season is quite short. PM me if you want more info
