Where to moor in Den Helder?

KMJC = Koninklijk Marine Jacht Club = Royal Navy Yacht Club

It looks as if the old yacht club has been booted out, which is a shame. It was a bit makeshift but handy, and you could go out easily. We did a crew-change once.

Talking of bootings-out, I understand that the Aeolus YC is at risk. There are plans for a pedestrian bridge over the Ij which will terminate at their premises, according to what they were saying last summer.

That is a great shame, a real friendly club with a large SM on the door step. How would the bridge fit in with the Cruiser terminal / dock on the opposite bank

I don't know. Maybe it will be slightly angled to avoid it. The problem seems to be that the excellent free ferries are getting over-congested at times and they think that a bridge is the only way to increase capacity. It would be a great shame and I would have thought that a wealthy city could afford to build a tunnel, like the excellent one in Antwerp, where you can enjoy the odd sensation of cycling under a river.

Rich,
We've used the navy marina many times over the last few years without problem. Very friendly and decent facilities.
Fuel berth at sensible price too.

Do make sure you call up before you enter the harbour though.

Thanks for the advice people. Looks like we'll use the naval one as its by far the most convenient en route.

Lots of Den Helder harbour is "military" out of bounds. The KMYC is the first small basin to StBD on the way in. KMYC.jpg
View from SE - the entrance is on the lower RHS of this picture.
Among other units there is a contingent of the Dutch equivalent of the Royal Marines, so upsetting local people is not a good idea
