We sail out of West Mersea, and have got 2 weeks for a cruise in July, and we love being anchored at the Rocks on the Deben. Can anyone recommend anchorages just as good within striking distance, but we need to be able to get ashore in the dinghy because we have a dog. The yacht draws 6ft. Thanks in anticipation.

How about Holland? You can get there in about 18hrs and once in the inland waterways there are lots of places to stop at including islands with basic amenities. I expect you'll need to get your dog 'microchipped' but I don't know the exact regulations. I've had three excellent holidays on the inland waterways (but not with a dog) and can recommend it Not in August as it gets very crowded but July should be OK.

Regardless of whether or not you could take your dog into Holland on a yacht, you certainly cannot bring it back on one, microchipped or not. Has to be by approved carrier, e.g. P&O Ferry Calais-Dover, and following onerous procedures involving vets.

The real problem with getting the mutt back is that all the approved carriers except one [1] expect you to be traveling by car.

[1] There is on one, from France in to Newhaven, that will take dogs for foot passengers. You have to provide your own cage and they stow it on the (noisy, unheated and inaccessible) car deck. They will only carry two per trip and they get booked up well in advance.

Holland is great, but the dog really rules it out.

I suggest the Ore/Alde. Anchor just short of Orford, next to Haveragate Island. Take the dinghy across the river and walk up to Orford - lots of good dog walks. Get the latest chartlet to help with the Ore entrance - go in near HW. Once over the bar, it's peaceful and lovely.

Sail further up and anchor by the Martello tower just short of Aldeburgh you may be able to sail further up river - I haven't tried, but there's lots more river!.

Then a nice sail up to Southwold - another interesting entrance, but a super place. You have to moor up here - I don't think you can anchor.

Enjoy!
