A lot of large garages and hardware stores do "prepacked" gallon containers or try a local domestic fuel supplier.

If you are in france all DIY stores stock both in various sizes up to 45l for about a fifth of that price.
Local ironmonger 4litres for £2.90(paraffin,only used for degreasing bike chain)so I dont know what it smells like when burnt.
I seem to remember seeing parrafin in garden centre but didn't note price.

I buy mine from a local garage, proper old type garage that sells all sorts in the mingin little shop. 1 gallon cost me £2.25 and it burns well too, not all paraffin is the same. It is from a pump, I have to provide my own container.

You just have to find that old garage, you know the type, the petrol is usually far too expensive to warrant a fuel stop, the type that rely on accounts, usually has a workshop attached.

Still available from bulk (own container) at around £2 per 4.54l from our local hardware shop. The glass bowl pump/measuring device is a pleasure to watch ... reminds me of the piston bere pumps the Gales Ales pubs used to use around here.

We use paraffin in 5lt containers for our anchor light, usually find it in ironmongers or French chandlers. Have tried expensive 'lamp oil' and didn't notice any difference. Harwoods in Yarmouth IOW stock both.

If you are going to use it for a Taylors hob or heater then only use the pre-packaged type.
If you use the cheap stuff from a pump it will block the little jets.
The pre-packaged stuff burns better and it is refined and pre filtered.
Normally available in wnite containers from loads of petrol stations and the like.

i buy something described as '28 second oil (kerosene)' for my heating boiler at 19p a litre. kerosene is american for paraffin and if it will go through my extremely expensive pressure jet burners i imagine it would be ok for most appliances. anyone tried using this in paraffin lamps or stoves?

and while on the subject, my suppliers also list '35 second oil (diesel)', how would that go in an engine?

Garden centres sell it for greenhouse heaters, though it has a silly name - Greenofin, or the like. It works in my anchor light.

Re: Where to get - now 35 second oil

Its red and called gas oil (as opposed to derv). Your diesel is probably already running on it.

The only problem is that its calorific value might be a bit different to derv, the sulpher content may be higher, and its cetane rating might be a bit lower.

All that lot means is that the engien might be a bit noisier, imperceptably down on power, and take less liberties with your oil change intervals.

(I do have the spec sheets for the two products from Texaco).

Oh & after 2006 I think it will be illegal to use for UK leisure boating.

If you ever pick up fuel and shortly afterwards find that the engine sounds like a bag pf scrap iron, its probably just a low cetane number fuel. Do not panic (having ensured you have enough oil and the presure is ok) as soon a syou have space in the tank start adding derv (road diesel), that should eventually bring the cetane rating up and quiten the engine - on the otherhand its cheaper to put up with the noise untill the next filling - I am not sure that I would take the later action if I had one of the turbocharged jobbies.

You can get parfin from your local small hardware store -- the proper ones that smell of old musty stuff -- not B&Q et al -- they may sell the stuff but the spotty youths that they employ don't seem to have a clue. The hardware store can also get proper lamp oil, which as far as I am aware is just a super refined version of parafin and isn't quite as pongy. They might have to order for you, but say you are surprised he doesn't stock given the proximity of marina for example.... Just make sure you buy a few bottles!

We add lemon grass oil to our lamp oil. makes the boat smell quite pleasant and just seems to cover the smell you get sometimes when its not burning quite right -- usually when I turn the wick up and it starts to smoke....

Re: Where to get - now 35 second oil

A local taxi driver was telling me he uses 75% heating oil and normal diesel mix and has been doing so for years with no ill effects re accelerated wear and noise....go figure?

it would certainly go ok!

35 second oil is diesel, i know the smarty pants will go on about additives but the bottom line is that it will burn ok without causing any probs. to expand the debate a bit maybe i should start a new post about if this shower that are in power do away with red then you can use 28 sec with the addition of some straigtht lube oil without any probs.
