Where to get a BMC engine fixed?

I have a BMC 1.5 which wouldn't start and had been diagnosed as having poor compression one one cylinder. I had it running on Easystart, but the marina say that probably made it worse.

The engine is currently out of the boat and I'm looking for somewhere to send it for repair. The boat is in Cambridgeshire.

Any idea what to expect to pay for replacing rings, gaskets etc and maybe a rebore?

Thank you. I have seen they do the parts. Just wondered how big a job it is to strip an engine and replace rings, gaskets etc. Eg: will I get a £5k bill?

If some one quotes yo £5K get on to Thorneycroft and find out what sort of deal they have on offer for part exchange.

If there are any canal engineers near you they could be a good bet, the BMC1500/Thorneycroft T90 was and is widely fitted in canal boats.

I found these people -http://www.calcuttboats.com/engines.html who offer a complete engine for £2587 plus VAT. I don't need a new gearbox as that was replaced last year.

I'm not sure if it will be cheaper to fix my engine or buy a recon from the above.

I wish I'd replaced the whole unitt last year as it ended up costing £5k for a new gearbox, prop, mounts etc. Now the whole thing has to come out again.

Have now spoken to the above who say they will look it over and let me know how much.

Only problem is getting it to them. I'm guessing a BMC is far too heavy for the back of an estate car?

I reconed one some years go and two of us lifted it into the back of a Renault 4. So you should be alright.
Bit late now, but at those prices you could have fitted a modern diesel.

Edit: Just a thought, but have you checked it for valve leakage? Bit of oil down the bores before another compression test. A head O/Haul would be miles cheaper.

Don't invest too much on this engine if at all possible. These things are too old. These are simple engines and working on them is easy .If all you need is honing the bores and new rings it shouldn't be too expensive but these things have the nasty habit of escalating and you may well end up spending as much, or nearly, the cost of a new engine. Not what you expect to hear, I know, experience has taught me well.

Hi
Back in 2002 I met a couple of middle aged chaps who ran a diesel engine workshop near Cambridge. I've been trying to think of the name but it just won't come back. I'm sure it is on the west of Cambs and could well be on the route to papworth. They were very knowledgeable and very fair with pricing and when my good lady flew back from Aicante with a broken injector pump off the 1500 they repaired it while she waited and ahe was back in Spain the same day.
Eventually the old engine went and we got a new one from thorneycroft engines, they are on the web if you google it. They used to be in Stamford but moved to Preston, and can still supply a refurbished 1500 or for not a lot more a modern replacement. They shipped the Mitsubishi based engine to us in Barcelona chepaer than we could buy the same engine in Spain. The Mitsubishi was very quiet and very powerful and above all very much more economical that the old 1500.
One of the other posters was quite right when he said they were a vehicle engine, quite often found in Taxis. A good small local garage out of town will be able to sort you out.

Sorry Phil but the 1500 was not in the taxi that was the 2.2 then the 2.5 the 1500 wouldnt even get the taxi rolling!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think you will find Taxis had the bigger 2.2 engine. 1.5 were in Austin J3 vans and Morris Marinas'. Pretty ancient history if you need a reliable donk in the Yacht.
