Dear All,
Thanks for taking a moment to share your experiences and advice - very useful and much appreciated. Speed wasn't an issue which I had considered - 'til now! I think I am in catch 22 a little - won't know what boat would be ideal for me until I get out there and do it and can't without a boat! Big steel (or any other material for that matter) doesn't really appeal - too pricey, more maintenance and bit of a handful short crew or single handed. I really enjoy being able to sail off a mooring or anchor in moments on my 27'er and would like to keep some of the fun involved in sailling a smaller boat, though I think would go up to 32/34' anyway - mine feels that bit too small when the wind gets up. The pardeys did how many thousand miles in a little engineless wooden boat so it's obviously possible. SO I think i may carry on search the net & south coast and trust my instinct (better informed now) that when the right boat comes I will know.
Thanks
Paddy
