Where to find a boat

Dear All,
Thanks for taking a moment to share your experiences and advice - very useful and much appreciated. Speed wasn't an issue which I had considered - 'til now! I think I am in catch 22 a little - won't know what boat would be ideal for me until I get out there and do it and can't without a boat! Big steel (or any other material for that matter) doesn't really appeal - too pricey, more maintenance and bit of a handful short crew or single handed. I really enjoy being able to sail off a mooring or anchor in moments on my 27'er and would like to keep some of the fun involved in sailling a smaller boat, though I think would go up to 32/34' anyway - mine feels that bit too small when the wind gets up. The pardeys did how many thousand miles in a little engineless wooden boat so it's obviously possible. SO I think i may carry on search the net & south coast and trust my instinct (better informed now) that when the right boat comes I will know.

Thanks

Paddy

There´s a 40ft steel boat that´s had all the internal wood ripped out because of woodworm. All the new materials have been bought but interest has been lost. The boat has a very extensive inventory and they´re asking Euro 8 000. It´s in Mindelo in Cap Verde. Email jeanmarie@clubenautico.biz and ask him to put you in touch with the owner (Pepe, the Spanish professor of art)

Ebbtides

Bit late on this one, Ive not been on these forums for a long time, however we have an Ebbtide 33. If you need any more info on them e:mail me direct. Suffise to say they're safe, and definitly no slower than youre average 33' yacht kitted for a trip.
On our Atlantic circuit we averaged 5.25 knots. We couldn't have done it faster if our boat were plastic. We went through some scruffy bits and she looked after us very well. Never felt vulnerable. On our crossing to Tobago, we left 3 hours behind a Swan 39, we arrived 3 hours before her !! So that shoots that one down.
On our crossing back we heard of four yachts that hit whales, two were abandoned, one guy hand pumped for three days but made it into Bermuda where she was hauled, the other one was us. We hit it hard, boat rose a surprising amount out of the water, lots of blood and thrashing from the whale, but no damage at all to the boat.
Any questions ? just ask.

Re: Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!

I am in the same boat so to speak! Last year couldn't release the cash for a few yachts that I came across and were on the market for some time. NOW that Iv'e got the spondolie's sitting tn the bank the yacht's that I since found albeit worldwide are selling pretty fast just missed a beauty 40foot ketch 1975 grp 22k euros, looking for long fin med / heavy disp, 39 to 44 foot as cheap as possible I am able and equiped to do re-fit. so If you find something you don't want let me know... how far afield are you looking ? will cross the big pond next May if I find one stateside!!!!!!!

best of luck

Re: Ebbtides

Chris,
See, that bit about hitting whales is the thing that I keep thinking about. I could easily swap a little speed ( though your trip sounds quick enough) and some time painting in return for peace of mind and a strong hull.
I had a look at the Ebbtide I'm interested in yesterday (which, incidently, hit Wales without the 'h' and only lost a few barnicles - further indication of the hull strength). To my untrained eye she looked very well if in need of some tlc.
Do you know of any known problems of Ebbtides which I should keep an eye out for?
Thanks

Re: Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!

The hardest lesson that I have learnt is to get a boat that is 'in use' rather than one that has been laid up for ages waiting to sell. I got what appeared to be a 'bargain' that had been laid up for three years as the owner fell ill and subsequently died. Exceptionally well equiped boat that appeared to be in A1 condition. BUT, I have spent a fortune on fixing or relacing things that were knackered because they hadn't been used for so long.

The idea of buying from someone returning from their travels is, IMO, a very wise idea.

Re: Ebbtides

Thanks Mogusiga, a helpful contribution. I've never hit a whale - there must be some really stupid whales around, the ones I've encountered have just played around the yacht. But I have smacked into a lump of coral at 6 knots and felt VERY grateful for steel. Just bounced off and sorted with a bit of extra primer at the next antifoul. That sort of thing can really spoil a fin-keeler's day (not to mention his no-claims benefit).

Re: Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!

haha

Wishbone, I seem to have found the same thing. My budget is pretty low, and I am looking for something in the 40' range. Having watched and daddled on a number of boats that were taking years to go, it turns out all (or at least most) ot the boats I felt would be appropriate have suddenly gone!

bummer.. anyway, gotta keep looking.

I guess one of the things is when spotting something likely the issue is to get in there before someone else does.

Charles
