Hi All,

I am looking to buy a new prop for my boat.

As this is my first boat i am unsure of the best places to buy from.

My boat is a Colvic Northerner and i am looking for a 13 x 13 L/H 3 blade prop.

What other info do i need to and where is the best place to go for one.

I am located in the North West.

Thanks

Assuming you'll be using the existing prop shaft, you need to know the shaft diameter, the taper and the thread for the retaining nut - oh yes, and the size of the woodruffe key. When I replaced my prop, I found the markings on the old prop from Darglow Engineering so phoned them for advice and they looked the original details up in their leger after twenty years!

If it is just a basic fixed prop you are after then try Sillette Sonic in London. They have a huge range, will check the correct prop for your boat and do mail order.

All propellor sources will want to check the detail of engine HP;gear reduction;Left or right hand; taper and diameter(MM/inch) of the shaft, and possibly whether a ropecutter is being used. Also depends what material your shaft is made of, some older boats had bronze ones.
Your old prop may be useful to determine an accurate fit on the existing shaft taper. When I had mine replaced the shaft and prop make did not drill a hole for the split pin so that when the castellated nut turned tight it would identify the precise position. I had to drill this using a cobalt drill to do so, not an easy task freehand drilling that.

Of course if you have changed your engine the old prop size may not be the one for the RPM of the new.

You didn't say why you want a new prop but if it's because of damage to the current one, consider getting it repaired. It's considerably cheaper and will end up pretty much the same as the new one.
Cheers

For feathering/folding props I'd be looking here...... http://www.bruntons-propellers.com They're not cheap but again, good quality.

Try http://www.crowthermarine.co.uk/ Northern and non-yachty hence good value. Several satisfied customers at my sailing club.

Another vote for Crowthermarine. Nice, helpfull people to deal with. Take your old prop along and they will make you one to match. They will show you round the works and also how they are made. As a Northern lad I wanted to support a "no frills" Northern engineering business.

My son used Clements (who he was well-pleased with as well) as he lives in Cambridge but neither of us would use a firm that we could not easily go and talk to.

Also recommend Crowther's in Oldham. They make the props on site, and will spare the time to give you help and advice if you need it.
