You could try abrasive mesh, instead. It's about 6 quid a roll...tool station sell it I think..80 grit. I find I no longer seem to bother with the acid.

You obviously like the nanny state ethos! I don't as this country is already becoming a dictatorship. Freedom is something we are rapidly losing thanks to government interference in our daily lives.
Back to the question and all builders merchants sell brick cleaner.

I agree with you. I buy 30% hydrochloric off the DIY store shelf and have never heard of an acid attack in Portugal.

The comment about removing salt deposits - would there be any value in running some acid through the outboard to clear out the coolant channels?

In a similar vein, at the start of this season I wrapped the bottom leg of my saildrive with cling film and poured diluted brick cleaner through the cooling channels, down from the strainer. I caught the liquid in a bucket after about 10-15 minutes and there was some evidence of it having removed growth etc. The boat was 5 seasons old. In previous years I’d poked around the channels with a welding rod but never seemed to dislodge anything.

There would, but hydrochloric acid attacks aluminium and maybe some of its alloys. Nothing bad is going to happen in five minutes but ensure thorough flushing afterwards.

Why you no use Oxalic Acid - very good to clean boats bottoms, and sides and tops too really. Mix powder an put all over and then hose off. Most good.

Sulphamic acid is a good descaler and won't attack brass, bronze and aluminium. Sold at plumbers merchants
