Hi folks, just reading this bit in my clyde cruising guide as we are heading north from crinan to winter at lochnell boatyard when the wind dies down

I cannot find pladda or sheep island. Can anyone tell me where they are? I've looked on my chart and my OS map. Can't find them!

I can find pladda's and sheep island's in various other parts of scotland but not around the dorus mor!

Thanks

Wow, not noticed that bit in the CCC guide before.
Not very helpful (with two island names not matching anything in the rest of the CCC guide) and doesn’t add anything over the proper tide notes given immediately thereafter (which are also based on Oban HW, which makes more sense as more local). Wonder why they haven’t deleted that quote from “the old CCC Blue Book”?

Not a particularly tricky bit for tide planning - use the times (given in the next para) and go with the flow, literally.

I presumed it was me missing something obvious

Can the stretch of water around fladda and sheep island be quite rough? Is that why they are saying to try and be there around slack?

We are intending to leave crinan as soon as there is a favourable tide through the dorus mor.

Thanks

Tend to be worse if anything with West or South in the wind, and you are going south.

You get quite big seas when you come out of the shelter of Insch/Sheep isle, but they quickly subside when approaching Fladda/Pladda.

Going north towards Oban or Duart the size of the sea is less of an issue.

Yes because unlike most of the rest of the area, for a short distance it is open to the Atlantic swell and the tides are strong.

However, as lnk says this tends to be worse if coming South, with a South going tide meeting swell from the SW.

Mull provides a lot more shelter from the N, but the recent strong NW winds could make a bit bumpy heading North with the tide, if don’t leave a while for the current weather to pass. But for a seaworthy boat and crew, should be a short bit of pain before get back into shelter from the outer islands.

We will have the tide with us and judging by next weeks forecast the wind as well, so hopefully it will be okay
Never been further north than the black isles yet!

It doesn't - but the 12 mile thing probably is not far off to be honest!
Although we've not really felt the need to go much further yet!
Next year though.....

Back in the days when they were giving names to islands they did not exercise a lot of imagination. All over GB and Ireland there are islands and rocks named after domestic and indigenous animals, "Goat", Horse", "Fox", "Hare" etc., and Insh (or innish) just means "island" in Gaelic, originating from the Latin "insula".

Never mind Fladda/Pladda etc, won’t you need a pretty high tide to get to Loch Nell - which looks to be an inland fresh water Loch
