I was told the reason that Bradwell was closed down was the condition of the lines was too expensive to maintain...
Somewhat odd therefore to build a new station next to the old one then have to build a whole new power line to the distribution point .. I guess near Battlesbridge?

Bradwell was closed down because it had been in operation for 40 years and the amount of refurbishment to operate for a further 10 years cost too much for its relatively small, by 21st century standards, output. It was a decision taken in a timely fashion more than 2 years before the actual shutdown. Had there been a problem with the transmission lines to Rayleigh, the cost of replacing both the towers and conductors would have been relatively small, but the cost of rebuilding turbines and alternators (I believe those turbines ran more hours than any other steam turbines in the world) and replacing the cooling water system wholesale, all necessary work, would have been far higher.

The UK has thousands of miles of overhead 132kV transmission lines, many rather older than the Rayleigh - Bradwell circuits and comprising the original UK grid system. Those which are still needed are maintained at quite reasonable cost by the National Grid Company and distributoion Companies.

The proposed Bradwell B station, if built, will produce far more power than you could get down the existing Bradweell - Rayleigh circuits, so will require new 400 kV circuits installed, probably going both North and Southwest from the plant.

I really wonder who comes up with such dtrange stories as you were told, tomahawk, and why?
