Last time I was up there the waiting list was years if you wanted to get a long term berth for more than a month. Feisty part of town... I much preferred Limehouse.
Where in the UK would you overwinter?

I think the London marinas are much more strict about residential nowadays? I managed a year in Limehouse and didn't get bothered but that was 2013

"Feisty"? We just started renting a flat overlooking greenland dock. After Hackney it's the height of gentility. Rather than SUVs with blacked out windows parking up outside and blasting out drill music at 3am we occasionally get woken up by geese. Rather than gangs of yoof in hoodies we suffer from a surfeit of joggers.
Biggest Tesco in London is 10 mins walk away. Big Decathalon for some boating/sporting needs, Central London or Canary Wharf access via riverboat from Greenland pier ( if you can afford the eyewatering ticket prices) or surrey quays/canada water a little walk away.

Overnight and weekly prices are absurd. 6-monthly and annual less so.

Walk a few blocks downriver & the chavometer would be into the red when I was there..
Some nice walks around there though, just had a look on google maps - Wibbly Wobbly's gone!

True, and mask compliance in Tesco which seems to be the definitive chavometer these days is maybe 70% (vs 98% in Hove Waitrose when I was last there) , but even the dodgier parts round here (outside the leafy new build areas) are better than where we were in Hackney. A lot of thought and love has clearly gone into creating some of the new (ie last 30 years) green spaces here. Not been in any pubs since lockdown but the Ship and Whale looks nice.
Fairways between pontoons in south dock look a little tight.

Having berthed in both PYH and Sutton Harbour, I’d choose Sutton as a winter base. You’d be locked in, so no issues with bad weather, the facilities are good, and you are just a few minutes walk from dozens of different restaurants and bars on the Barbican. And if you need transport links, they are also only a short walk away.

We've been trying to figure the answer to this question ourselves. We're relatively young (30s) and are planning to cruise Scotland/Baltics next spring/summer and have spent this summer on the East coast visiting the various rivers and nature reserves we hadn't been to before. We've previously wintered in London, Crouch and Medway.
This year we fancied going somewhere a bit different. So rather than sticking to one place we're thinking about taking advantage of Premier & Boatfolk's (D&H) winter monthly deal, which is around £320/m for our 42ft, and moving east to west between the winter weather patterns.
Mentions of Plymouth Yacht Haven sound attractive too, there's one here in Essex at Fambridge that's very good, although their monthly winter offer seems very steep (double) others. Clearly they want you for the full 6 months of winter

OP here... certainly some interesting suggestions. I wouldn't fancy London at all though. I have never liked the place. My thoughts at this stage are more Bristol / west country or the South Coast, but I also have to factor in budget.
