Old cars usually seem to end up on a scrap heap somewhere, piled six deep. (Before this, they have been stripped of any remaining useful parts - in fact in my Ford Anglia days as a student, they were the main source of spares !)
Eventually they end up crushed into a cube, recycled etc. Some are unfortunately dumped in the countryside or on the coast and left to rot.

I assume that old wooden hulls get broken up for firewood or just burnt as a whole. For GRP, you don't see loads of them piled up in a field, yard, or whatever waiting to be disposed of, in a controlled way. Some get left to rot on their moorings, but only a small percentage. It might be useful to buy the occasional spare part from a breakers, instead of new from the swindleries.

So where do they all go? Is there a business opportunity out there somewhere?

Alk is nearly 31 years old - but still in a far better condition than many boats a fraction of her age.
I cannot imagine she will ever need a scrap heap as long as she has a caring owner.
Anyway, she'd prefer to be scuttled first!

Re: They all go to

Now, now, that's a bit below the belt. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Mind you the Dunstaffnage fleet does appear to be one of the oldest in the UK even though they've got a couple of post 2002 boats now.
From looking at Charter prices in Scotland it would also appear that Jimi is more wealthy than I thought. You could get 2 weeks in the Med for a week on the West Coast. Ok, I agree the scenery ain't bad but you've got to avoid midges, haggis and the AWFUL meat pies. It costs more and takes longer to get there as well.

Bugger me! How many insults can you cram into a few words .

You managed to :
Call me a poor sod
Malign the Charter fleet
Criticise scottish cuisine
Imply that no-one in their right mind would be in Scotland when they could be in the med

.. anything else while you're at it?

there are an awful lot of old boats lying around in the corners of clubs and boatyards, never being used. at the last count, only 50% of our members bothered to launch last year.

and as far as I can gather, new sailing boat sales numbers are not what they were 20 years ago. lots of people sailing older boats

having said all that, there must be a crunch some day. you cant keep selling new boats without the old ones depreciating eventually to zero and being scrapped. everything else follows that pattern. i reckon second hand boat prices, particularly in the uk, are unsustainable long term.

"scottish cuisine" - er, um, what exactly is that ?

PS. I'm trying to keep all the S.Coast softies away from what is by far the best cruising area in the UK. I would have thought that you, obviously being a pie eater, would be grateful. Ah, but you've emigrated haven't you and have joined THEM /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

I'VE GOT THEM! yeah thats right I,ve got them but I'm not telling you where. When I've got enough of them I'm going to set them up and release them into the Solent and let them charge about at random in a kind of physical demostration of chaos theory. There they will put the fear of god into any sailor with the slightest respect for his/her craft or the merest regard for the colregs, and who dares to venture out. Just like some joker does to me when I have my annual weeks holiday the first week in August.
