Is anyone aware of the base engine for the TAMD63? I have a feeling this engine might also appear in Volvo cars or trucks? If so I might well try to source some expensive marine parts from the auto/truck dealer instead.

A quick Google search shows this question asked 7/8 yrs ago...maybe you will find answers....

Volvo designed basically for trucks but probably only used in this power output for pleasure craft the P is the give away
too big for cars but used in less stressed versions for a wide range of uses

as for buying the marinised parts well they come from Penta which is part of Volvo that marinises them
if you have the correct part number then getting them as truck parts with the same number would be ok but if the part number is not same as truck parts then it’s not usable

It all goes back a very long way , started as the 60 A and evolved up to the 63L and P , bowed out when the D6 was introduced.

I know you have some very minor problems but this engine and the 75P are in my opinion the best engines in this ho range to come out the factor , let’s face it you don’t read many posts anywhere on the net about piston failures and leaking coolers, blown injectors , the list goes on , it’s successor is a joke.

Thanks for all of the input and research! I'm more interested in mechanical parts than filters, etc. but probably reconciled to just getting the best discount I can on the marine part number (if I cant repair it).

Do know of somebody who had to rebuild a 60C, it took soon time to ascertain what was unique to the marine engine and what could be bought more cheaply elsewhere.
Delays finding some valve guides at the time to refurbish old cylinder head.
After spending money and refitting it turned out the head was cracked. Who ever did the refurbish did not pressure test.
In the end he had to import a second hand cylinder head from the USA.

Google is far better at searching than the useless forum software.

AAIK the origin of the 63 series engines was in trucks. However the use profile of a truck engine and a boat engine, planing and semi displacement are very different.
I doubt many of the components are from the original truck engine.

I am on my second pair of 63p’s in two boats and good reliable units they are. You will struggle to get major castings but most parts and ancillaries are freely available.

I didn’t know about this but for some time I have ended my search query on Google with just ybw and it usually brings back a lot of posts. I just tried ‘Volvo Penta TAMD63 ybw’ and it brought up quite a few with the post cited in this thread being on the second page. Tried your extension and it was the third item on the first page. You live and learn ??

If you get hold of a VP parts catalogue you can often cross reference the part nos to a truck dealer's site.
