Where can I get one of these from?

Hi,

I have 3 of these on the boat which are hasp & staple like albeit the hasp bit turns to secure the back rest of the seat(s).

2 out of the 3 don't turn which means that the back rest falls forward, annoying!

I've looked online but I'm unable to locate any of these. They are original so I'm not sure if these are still available. Any guidance greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe remove them and give them a good soaking in some easing oil? Then try and get them moving gently. Might be easier than trying to find exact replacements. Or have you tried that already?

To be honest, no, I haven't so thanks for the advice!

I think at the price below I'd also look at taking the turn button off and gradually freeing them up.. (and at least if you search for turn button hasp online you'll find others available).

Would repeated lots of boiling water work on them like it would on aluminium?

It's brass so I'd have a go at removing it and leaving it to soak in vinegar for a few days, then try some gentle heating and cooling if the vinegar doesn't get you anywhere. If that doesn't succeed they are just brass and quite simple in design, some patience and hand tools will make copies.

It amazes me the prices of 'marine' items ......

I would be inclined to replace them all with overcentre latches ... with something in this style (its only example)

That way - no seizing up ... no rattle fastening as it pulls tight to close ... easy to find replacements ...

When that boat was built they would have been a cheap off the shelf item, but there is no demand for that sort of thing now so any replacement of the style like the one from Classic Marine would be made in very small numbers, hence the high price. I have similar problems on my boat with anti rattle catches which I remember from the time were cheap - a few shillings each. Thee current replacement, not quite the same but similar design is over £25 from Daveys.

However I agree the OP should be able to free up the turnbuckle by soaking in kettle cleaner to get it nice and shiny then penetrating oil to clean any remaining crud from the pin

Seems a shame to discard original features of the boat when they can probably be repaired without too much difficulty.

Also, any new fitting will almost certainly have fixing holes in different places to the originals, necessitating making more holes and plugging redundant ones.

But, if you do replace the old ones, I'd be happy to take them off your hands . . . . ;)
